McPherson, Kan. - The McPherson College men’s soccer team is set to open the 2011 season on Wednesday, Aug. 31, when the Bulldogs host York College (Neb.) at McPherson Stadium at 8 p.m. Following York, McPherson hits the road for a weekend twin bill in Salt Lake City. The Bulldogs open the road trip against host institution Westminster College on Saturday at 3 p.m. (CST), before facing off against La Sierra University at 1 p.m. (CST) on Sunday.

McPherson enters the season off a disappointing 2010 campaign that saw the Bulldogs end the regular season with a 9-9-1 overall record and 5-4-0 mark in league play. Despite the lack luster regular season, MC advanced to the semifinal round of the KCAC Men’s Soccer Postseason Tournament before falling to eventual tournament champion Kansas Wesleyan University.

Head coach Doug Quint’s 2011 squad features 15 newcomers to join a strong core of returners, including six starters from last season. Senior defender and team captain Tyler Tank (Austin, Texas) is back to lead MC for his senior season. Tank, a 6-5 200-pound native of Austin, Texas, scored a career-high four goals in 2010.

McPherson defeated Allen County Community College, 5-0, and a group of McPherson alumni, 6-3, in preparation for the season.

Scouting York
The Panthers finished 1-16-0 overall in 2010, including 0-4-0 during Midland Athletic Conference play to earn fifth place in the five team league. York returns its top scorer, Chris Kistenoqlu, who led YC with 10 points on four goals and two assists.  Head coach Chris Luther added 17 newcomers to the squad, including 12 freshmen.

Scouting Westminster

Westminster enters the weekend with a 1-1-0 overall record and 1-0-0 record in Frontier Conference matches. The Griffins return 16 players from a 2010 team that finished 9-9-1 overall and 1-3-0 in league play. Westminster returns leading scorer from a year ago Dennis Sellis. Sellis scored eight goals in 10 games before injury ended his season.

The Griffins fell in their season opener last Friday to Baker University (Kan.), 1-0, before bouncing back to knock off Rocky Mountain College, 1-0, Monday night at Dumke Field. Westminster took the advantage in the 24th minute when Sellis found the back of the net for his first goal of the season.

Westminster is 19-3-2 at Dumke Field over the last three seasons.

Scouting La Sierra
La Sierra comes to Salt Lake City with a 2-0-0 overall record, including an impressive 2-1 decision over nationally ranked Vanguard University (Calif.). Vanguard took the early lead in the match with a goal in the third minute, but the Golden Eagles battled back with two in the second period, including the game winner in the 88th minute by Jonas Ornelas, to earn the victory.

The Golden Eagles brought that momentum into their next match, as they defeated Arizona Christian University, 7-0. Six different players scored in the match.

La Sierra finished 2010 with a 9-9-2 overall record.
