McPherson, Kan. – The McPherson College women’s soccer team kicked off the 2011 season with a 1-0 overtime victory over visiting York College (Neb.) Wednesday evening at McPherson Stadium.
The win improves the Bulldogs to 1-0 on the season, while the Panther fall to 0-1.
The two sides remained scoreless after 90 minutes, before freshman forward Geneva Gray (Littleton, Colo.) scored the game winner in the 93rd minute. After receiving a ball at her feet off a deflection, Gray struck the ball from about 20 yards and into the upper left corner of the net. The goal is Gray’s first of the season and first of her collegiate career.
As a team, McPherson tallied nine shots, including three on frame, while the Panthers took five shots.
Junior goalkeeper Molly Whitwell (Plano, Texas) recorded her first clean sheet of the season with five saves in the effort. Freshman forward Stephanie Cornell (Colorado Springs, Colo.) led the Bulldogs with four shots in her collegiate debut.
Panther midfielder Carrie Berzins paced the Panthers with two shots, both on goal.
The Bulldogs return the pitch on Saturday when they face the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. (CST) at Lion Stadium in Colorado Springs, Colo.
