Bulldogs Travel to Manhattan Christian Wednesday; Host Mid-America Christian Saturday

McPherson, Kan. - The McPherson College men’s soccer team continues its non-conference schedule Wednesday night in Manhattan, Kan., as the Bulldogs travel to Manhattan Christian College for a 7 p.m. kick off, before returning home to McPherson Stadium Saturday afternoon against Mid-America Christian University (Okla.). Kickoff against MACU is at 4 p.m.

The Bulldogs are 2-2-0 overall entering the week after defeating Morningside College on Saturday, 4-1. The victory maintained MC’s perfect home record in 2011 with wins against York College (Neb.), 7-0, and previously mentioned Morningside.

Manhattan Christian is 1-2-0 overall following a loss against fellow Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference member school Bethel College. The Crusaders lone victory came on Aug. 30 when they defeated Bethany College 1-0.

Mid-America Christian is 2-1-1 overall on the season with victories coming against Southwestern Assemblies of God University, 3-1, and Southwestern Christian University, 4-1. The Evangels play KCAC member school Southwestern College on Wednesday.

Freshman midfielder Oscar Cortez (Dallas, Texas) took over the points lead in McPherson’s victory over Morningside with a goal in the 44th minute. The scored gives him a season total of two goals and three assists for seven points. Junior Juan Garcia (Reno, Nev.) rests just behind Cortez with six points on two goals and two assists. Garcia scored MC’s first goal against the Mustangs on Sunday.   

Senior goalkeeper Blake Jett (Fort Worth, Texas) continues to be a consistent presence in goal for the Bulldogs. Starting all four matches, Jett owns a 1.25 goals against average and .783 saves percentage. He has made 18 saves, while allowing only five goals on the year with one shutout.

Next week, the Bulldogs wrap up their two-game home stand against Oklahoma Wesleyan University on Saturday, Sept. 24. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.

» The Crusaders enter the week with a 1-2-0 overall record and are riding a two-game losing streak. The losses came against Ottawa University, 3-1, and Bethel College, 2-1.

» Manhattan Christian competes in the Midwest Christian College Conference.

» The Crusaders finished 2010 with a 15-6-2 overall record and claimed the MCCC Conference Champions and the NCCAA Central Region Champions. Manhattan Christian fell in the first round of the NCCAA National Tournament to Ohio Christian, but bounced back with victories against Hillsdale Freewill Baptist and Dallas Christian College to take fifth place.

» Last season, McPherson defeated the Crusaders 4-2 at McPherson Stadium.

» The Evangles enter the week with a 2-1-1 overall record, including wins against Southwestern Assemblies of God University (3-1) and Southwestern Christian (Okla.) (4-1). MACU is 1-1 in road contests this season.

» Freshman forward Brian Armstrong leads MACU with two goals and four points, however he has been held scoreless of the Evangels last two matches.

» Mid-America Christian is being outshot, 67-40, by opponents, but holds a 8-5 advantage in goals.

» Junior goalkeeper Zane Bourne has played 260 minutes in goal this season. He owns a 1.38 goals against average and .750 save percentage. Bourne earned SAC Defensive Player of the Week honors following a four save effort in the Evangles 3-1 win over SAGU on Aug. 24.

» Last season, MACU defeated McPherson, 1-0, with an overtime goal by Casey King in the 109th minute.
