Women’s Soccer Snaps Three-Match Winless Streak with Victory at Manhattan Christian

– The McPherson College women’s soccer team snapped a three-match winless streak Wednesday night with a 2-0 victory against Manhattan Christian College at Anneberg Park in Manhattan, Kan.

With the win, McPherson improves to 2-3-0 on the season, while Manhattan Christian falls to 0-4-0. All four of the Crusader’s losses have come against KCAC teams.

McPherson dominated possession the entire evening, but the score remained tied, 0-0, following the first 45 minutes of the match.

The Bulldogs broke through in the 64th minute when junior Cheyna Buchman (McPherson, Kan.) sent a cross through the six-yard box that found the foot of freshman Stephanie Cornell (Colorado Springs, Colo.) who one-touched it into the back of the net for her first collegiate goal.

McPherson put the game to rest in the final seconds when Geneva Gray (Littleton, Colo.) scored her second of the season to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead with a little more than 30 seconds remaining.

MC outshot Manhattan Christian 36-8, including 18 shots on frame, while also holding an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Freshman Haley Anderson (Highland Village, Texas) registered a match-high 10 shots (seven on goal), while Cornell finished the evening with nine.

Junior goalkeeper Molly Whitwell (Plano, Texas) earned her second shutout of the season with four saves in 90 minutes of play.

Brighid O’Toole accounted for five of MCC’s eight shots.

The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday, Sept. 17, when they host Mid-America Christian at McPherson Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
