McPherson, Kan. – The McPherson College volleyball team went 1-1 on the day as part of a three-team triangular hosted Saturday at the McPherson Sport Center. The Bulldogs opened the afternoon with a loss against Sterling College, 3-1, before bouncing back with a sweep against Central Christian College.
The split gives McPherson a 3-10 overall record, while the loss puts the Bulldogs at 1-3 in Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference play.
In Saturday’s first match, McPherson faced KCAC rival Sterling College. The Bulldogs dropped a hard-fought first set, 25-23, but bounced back with a 25-19 win in the second frame to tie the match at 1-1. However, MC’s offense hit -0.083 in the third set as the Warriors took the set, 25-14.
Sterling continued that dominance into the fourth set, as the Warriors blazed out to a 13-3 lead. However, despite the match looking lost, the Bulldogs outscored SC 16-5 to take a 19-18 lead. Senior Kory Hiebert (Goessel, Kan.) and junior Natalie Boss (Waterville, Kan.), who tallied four kills apiece, led the rally for MC. However, errors late in the match doomed McPherson as the Warriors took the set and the match 25-23.
Hiebert led MC with 14 kills, while Boss tallied 13 and senior hitter Amy Neufeld (Hillsboro, Kan.) scored eight kills, respectively. Senior libero Brooke Wedel (Moundridge, Kan.) tallied a match-high 23 digs in the contest.
The Bulldogs wrapped up Saturday’s action with a 25-13, 25-6, 25-10 sweep of Central Christian.
Eighteen different Bulldogs played in the match with freshman Tori Phelan (Rangely, Colo.) leading the squad with a career-high eight kills, while Neufeld added seven of her own. Junior setter Hannah Hoffman (Bendena, Kan.) dished out 12 assists in the match, while Wedel posted a team-high eight digs.
As a team, McPherson hit .371, including a .450 attacking percentage in the second set. The Bulldog defense held the Tigers to a -0.74 hitting percentage.
McPherson returns on action on Monday when they host Manhattan Christian College at the McPherson Sport Center. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
