Winfield, Kan. – After a weather delay that postponed the game nearly 24 hours, the McPherson College football team picked up its first win of the season with a 13-10 decision over Southwestern College Sunday evening at Richard L. Jantz Stadium in Winfield, Kan.
The victory extends the Bulldog win streak against the Builders to four games and improves MC to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference play, while Southwestern falls to 1-2 overall and 1-1 league action.
Senior running back Travon Jones (Fresno, Calif.) capped a 10-play, 67-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run to give McPherson the 13-10 lead with 14:54 left in the game. On their next drive, Southwestern squandered a chance to tie as a 35-yard Austin Ledy field goal attempt fell short. The Bulldog defense dug-in following the missed attempt, allowing the Builders only eight yards on their next three possessions to close out the victory.
Jones recorded his second consecutive 100-yard performance with 101 yards rushing on a career-high 26 carries. He also caught two passes for 13 yards.
The McPherson ground attack finished the night with 178 yards, while the Bulldogs tallied 278 yards of total offense.
Junior quarterback Matt Summers-Johnson (Portland, Ore.), who made his second start of the season, completed 4-of-8 passes for 74 yards, including a 46-yard touchdown strike to senior wide receiver Chase Ozbun (Rose Hill, Kan.) to give McPherson a 6-0 lead at the 8:29 mark in the first quarter.
Southwestern scored 10 points in the second quarter on a Jordan Barrett touchdown pass to Wayne Clutter and an 18-yard Ledy field goal. However, the Bulldog defense held Southwestern to just 85 total yards in the second half, while forcing four SWC punts en route to the victory.
McPherson held Southwestern to 248 total yards of offense on the evening.
Senior linebacker Darrick Johnson (Maricopa, Ariz.) and senior defensive lineman Charles Ryan (Los Angeles, Calif.) led MC with eight tackles each. Additionally, Ryan recorded 1.5 tackles for loss.
McPherson returns to the field on Saturday, Sept. 24 when they travel to Friends University. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Austin-Adair Stadium in Wichita, Kan. A live video feed of the game will be made available courtesy of the KCAC Broadcast Network.
