McPherson, Kan. – The McPherson College volleyball team made quick work of Manhattan Christian College Monday night, sweeping the Crusaders 3-0 (25-21, 30-28, 25-16) at the McPherson College Sport Center.
The victory improves McPherson to 4-10 overall on the season, while extending the Bulldogs win streak to two matches. Manhattan Christian falls to 9-5 overall and 1-3 against Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference opponents.
Senior Amy Neufeld (Hillsboro, Kan.) led the Bulldogs with 11 kills on 20 attacks and a hitting percentage of .300. Neufeld also had six digs, two assists and four block assists. Junior Natalie Boss (Waterville, Kan.) notched 10 kills of her own, while senior Kory Hiebert added seven, respectively.
Senior Brelynn Schloo (Salina, Kan.) and sophomore Shelby Yardley (Derby, Kan.) tallied 20 assists each, while senior libero Brooke Wedel (Moundridge, Kan.) chipped in a match-high 26 digs.
McPherson held Manhattan Christian to a .079 hitting percentage and 35 kills. The Crusaders committed 24 errors on the night, while McPherson committed 20. The Bulldogs had 73 digs, while Manhattan tallied 60. The two sides were nearly identical in team blocks, as the Crusaders had five and MC notched six.
The two teams traded points to open set one 8-8. However, four consecutive hitting errors by the Crusaders gave MC a 12-8 advantage, which proved to be all the cushion the Bulldogs would need as they cruised to the 25-21 victory in the opening frame.
The Bulldogs seized early control in the second frame, but a Neufeld service error late in the set sparked a 10-2 run by the Crusaders that tied the score, 24-24. The two teams traded points before McPherson took advantage of two consecutive MCC attacking errors to win the set, 30-28.
McPherson carried that momentum into the third set where they went up 14-6 on a Boss kill that forced a Crusader timeout. The pause failed to phase the Bulldogs as they rolled through the set, 25-16, to earn the victory. Defensively, MC held Manhattan Christian to a -0.028 hitting percentage in the frame.
McPherson returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 21 when they travel to Tabor College. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. (CST) inside Tabor Gymnasium.
