Bulldog Volleyball hosts Intra-county Bethany College Wednesday Night

The McPherson College volleyball team welcomes intra-county rival Bethany College to the McPherson College Sport Center on Wednesday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m., in a match that will be carried live on Macbulldogs.com.

McPherson enters the match 4-11 overall and 1-4 in Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference play following a disappointing 3-1 loss at Tabor College last Wednesday night. The Bulldogs opened the match with a 25-22 set one victory, but failed to sustain the momentum, dropping the next three frames.

Three Bulldogs enter the week with at least 100 kills, including senior Kory Hiebert (Goessel, Kan.) with 146, senior Amy Neufeld (Hillsboro, Kan.) with 125 and junior Natalie Boss (Waterville, Kan.) with 110. Neufeld has had the hot hand of late with 25 kills over the last three matches, including an 11-kill effort in the Bulldogs win against Manhattan Christian College on Sept. 19.

Bethany owns a 1-11 overall record and 0-4 mark in conference action. The Swedes are currently winless in their last 11 matches and have been swept in eight of those. Freshman outside hitter Alexa Gerber averages 2.32 kills per set to led the Swedes offensively.

After Bethany, McPherson hits the road for a Thursday night matchup with Bethel College. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. inside Thresher Gymnasium in North Newton, Kan.

  • The Swedes are 1-11 on the year and 0-4 in conference play following a weekend in which they lost to La Sierra (Calif.) (3-0), Johnson & Wales (Colo.) (3-0) and Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) (3-2). BC is currently riding an 11 game losing streak.
  • BC’s lone victory of the season came on Aug. 29 when they defeated Manhattan Christian College, 3-0.
  • Bethany has been swept, 3-0, in eight of 12 matches in 2011
  • Freshman outside hitter Alexa Gerber leads the team with a 2.3 kills per set average and 79 total kills, while junior middle hitter Shelby Broeckelman averages 2.0 kills per set.
  • At setter, junior Theresa Read is averaging 6.3 assists per set and a team-high 269 assists. No other Swede has more than 20 assists
  • Defensively, sophomore middle hitter Taci Richard leads the team with 16 total blocks, while defensive specialist Shelby Koncel leads with 198 total digs (4.0 digs per set).
  • Nathalea Stephenson, who served as the McPherson College head volleyball coach prior to Susan Barton, is the head coach for the Swedes.
