Salt Lake City, Utah  –
The McPherson College men’s soccer team battled back with two goals in the second half, but failed the score the equalizer in a 3-2 loss against Westminster Saturday at Dumke Field.

With the loss, McPherson falls to 1-1 on the season, while the Griffins improve to 3-1.

The Bulldogs found themselves in a 3-0 hole after the first 45 minutes, as Griffin forward Dennis Sellis scored two and Bobby Ward added one of his own.

However, McPherson bounced back with a strong second half as Geverton Ost (Porto Algre, Brazil) placed an Oscar Cortez (Dallas, Texas) corner kick into the back of the net, cutting the deficit to 3-1. The Bulldogs added their second of the period 16 minutes later when forward Juan Garcia (Reno, Nev.) scored his first goal of the season off a cross by Cortez, 3-2.

McPherson had a couple of chances in the closing minutes, including a long strike by Cortez that hit the crossbar and deflected out of play.

Westminster held a slim 14-13 advantage in shots and a 7-6 edge in shots on goal. The Bulldogs attempted four corner kicks.

Juan Garcia led the Bulldog attack with three shots, including two on goal, while Cortez, Heriberto Garcia (Dallas, Texas) and Ost recorded two apiece, respectively.

Blake Jett played the entire 90 minutes in goal. He made four saves in the effort.

Sellis paced the Griffins with six shots.

McPherson returns to the pitch tomorrow when they play La Sierra University (Calif.) at Dumke Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. (CST).
