Point Lookout, Mo. – The McPherson College volleyball team opened the 2011 season with a rough start as the Bulldogs dropped four matches over the weekend at the Mazzio’s Volleyball Tournament in Point Lookout, Mo.. MC dropped a pair on Friday to host College of the Ozarks (Mo.) (0-3) and John Brown University (Ark.) (1-3), before falling to William Penn University (Iowa) (2-3) and Southern Nazarene University (Okla.) (0-3) on Saturday.
The losses drop the Bulldogs to 0-4 on the season.
Host College of the Ozarks took Friday’s opening match from the Bulldogs by the scores of 12-25, 19-25, 23-25. Kory Hiebert (Goessel, Kan.) led the Bulldogs with 11 kills, while Amy Neufeld (Hillsboro, Kan.) added six and Karis Janzen (Hillsboro, Kan.) chipped in four. Brooke Wedel (Moundridge, Kan.) paced the Bulldog backline with 17 digs.
In the second match, McPherson split the first two set with John Brown, 18-25, 25-23, but could not sustain the momentum dropping the third and fourth sets, 12-25, 22-25. Hiebert and Neufeld again led MC with 12 and 11 kills, respectively.
The Bulldogs inconsistent offensive attacked continued in the third match, as MC fell, 18-25, 25-23, 25-18, 20-25, 11-25, to William Penn.
McPherson went on to drop the fourth and final match of the tournament, 19-25, 26-28, 17-25, against Southern Nazarene.
The Bulldogs will look to rebound on Wednesday, Sept. 7 when they open conference action against Southwestern College. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. (CST) inside the McPherson Sport Center.
