Porter’s Career-High Leads McPherson Past Bethany

The McPherson College women’s basketball team exploded for a 16-4 run to open the second half on its way to a 70-54 victory over Bethany College on Wednesday night at Hahn Gymnasium.
 
With the victory, McPherson improves to 10-9 overall and 5-4 in conference, while Bethany slips to 3-17 overall and 0-9 in the league.
 
Guard Kt Porter (Wichita, Kan.) notched her third straight double figure scoring effort with a career-high 21 points, including 15 points in the first half. Porter ended the contest shooting 8-of-13 from the field and 3-for-6 from beyond the arc. Joining Porter in double-digits was forward Elice Frey (Riley, Kan.) with 13 points and forward Kaylee Cramer (Healy, Kan.) with 12 points. Cramer also added a game-high nine rebounds.
 
For the game, McPherson hit 44.3 percent (27-of-61) of its shots from the field, but just 4-of-18 (22.2 percent) from 3-point range. The Bulldogs made up for their struggles from beyond the arc with a 70.6 percent (12-of-17) effort at the foul line.
 
After surging to a 20-point half time advantage, McPherson opened the second period with a 16-4 run, including a combined 10 points from Porter and Frey to take a 59-27 lead with 10:42 left. However, the Bulldog offense struggled over the final 10 minutes of the contest as the Swedes outscored McPherson, 27-9, but failed to cut the lead to less than 15.
 
In the opening half, McPherson rebounded from a slow start by ending the first half on a 22-12 surge over six minutes to take a 43-23 lead at the break.
 
The Bulldogs opened the half with a 9-2 run, but went without a field goal over the next five minutes before a Taylor Puttergill (Tryon, Neb.) 3-pointer made it 12-5 at the 11:47 mark. McPherson grew its lead out to 12 points following back-to-back Porter 3-pointers and a layup by Brooke Weisenburger (Gardner, Kan.).
 
For the half, McPherson shot 48.4 percent from the field, including a 4-of-9 effort from beyond the arc.  
 
Bethany finished the contest shooting just 29.6 percent (21-for-71) from the field, including only 1-for-17 from 3-point range.
 
Forward Tasha Wagoner led BC with 17 points and seven rebounds in the loss.
 
McPherson returns to the court on Saturday, Jan. 21, when they host Bethel College. Tipoff between the Bulldogs and Threshers is scheduled for 5 p.m. (CT) inside the McPherson Sport Center.
