McPherson, Kan. – Elice Frey (Riley, Kan.) notched her 12
th double-digit scoring performance of the season with 19 points to lead four Bulldogs in double figures, as the McPherson College women’s basketball team rolled to its fourth straight victory, 64-49, over Tabor College on Thursday night.
In addition to setting a season-best four-game winning streak, the victory doubled McPherson’s win total from a year ago, as the Bulldogs improved to 12-9 on the season and 7-4 in KCAC play. Tabor falls to 3-18 overall and 1-10 in conference action.
“I’m really proud of the composure our team has shown over the last couple of games,” said McPherson head coach Cy Rolfs. “Although we were taken out of our rhythm early, we found ways to score. I really like how far we have come defensively. Our goal was to hold Tabor under 50 points and we accomplished that.”
Frey also added six rebounds, four steals and one block in the effort.
Kt Porter (Wichita, Kan.) was second on the team with 14 points and a season-high five rebounds, while
Taylor Puttergill (Tryon, Neb.) contributed 12 points to go along with four rebounds for the Bulldogs. Rounding out MC’s double-digit scorers was
Brooke Weisenburger (Gardner, Kan.) who posted a season-high 10 points.
McPherson used a solid defensive effort, timely rebounding and patient offense to fuel a 38-6 run that spanned the last four minutes of the first half and the first five of the second.
Back-to-back baskets from Katlyn Mary gave Tabor a 22-16 lead with 5:15 remaining in the first half. However, a layup from Frey and 3-pointer by
Kayla Jernigan (Johnson City, Texas) sparked a 17-2 run that gave McPherson a 33-24 lead at the break.
The Bulldogs continued the surge to open the second half, scoring six straight points, extending its margin to 39-24, before Tabor notched their first basket of the frame. McPherson continued its stellar play, pushing the lead out to a game-high 20-points, 48-28, with 14:56 left in the half.
Tabor would pull as close as 11, but never threaten the McPherson advantage the rest of the game.
Overall, McPherson shot 33.9 percent (21-of-62) from the floor and a season-high 82.6 percent (19-of-23) at the foul line. Defensively, the Bulldogs forced 30 turnovers, while holding a 41-27 edge in rebounds.
Tabor ended the game shooting 48.8 percent (20-of-41) from the field, including a 7-for-18 effort from 3-point range. Mary led TC with 23 points.
The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday, Jan. 28, when they travel to Sterling College. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. (CT) inside Warrior Gymnasium.
