McPherson, Kan. - Coming off an impressive 20-point victory against York College (Neb.) to wrap up non-conference play, the McPherson College women’s basketball team resumes its conference schedule Thursday night when the Bulldog travel to Southwestern College. Tip off between the Bulldogs and Moundbuilders is scheduled for 6 p.m. (CT).
Thursday’s game will be live streamed on the KCAC Broadcast Network, while radio coverage will be carried on 96.7 FM KBBE MidKansas Radio. In addition, an audio stream will be available on Macbulldogs.com.
The Bulldogs enter the contest with an 8-6 overall record and 3-1 mark in conference play with victories against Bethel (74-62), Tabor (62-52) and Saint Mary (73-67) to open league action.
In their last game, McPherson had four players score in double figures, including a team-high 16 points from
Elice Frey (Riley, Kan.), as the Bulldogs knocked off York (Neb.), 67-47. MC finished the night shooting 43.9 percent (29-of-66) from the field, while forcing 29 Panther turnovers and holding York to only 23.9 percent (16-of-67) shooting.
Southwestern, who is receiving votes in the latest NAIA Coaches’ Top 25 Poll, has won two straight and 7-of-8 en route to a 9-5 record and 3-1 mark in the KCAC. The Builders only loss during the stretch came at Friends University (86-76) on Dec. 10.
Following Southwestern, the Bulldogs continue the gauntlet portion of their schedule with a trip to Friends on Saturday, Jan. 7. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
Scouting Southwestern
Under the direction of 14th year head coach Dave Denly, Southwestern comes into Thursday’s game with a 9-5 overall record and 3-1 mark in KCAC action. The Builders have won two straight and seven of their last eight following a 97-74 victory at Oklahoma Wesleyan on Monday night. SWC’s only loss in conference play came on Dec. 10 when they fell at Friends University, 86-76.
Against Oklahoma Wesleyan, Southwestern shot a season-high 51.5 percent (35-of-68) from the field, including 11 3-pointers, while also converting 16-of-19 (84.2 percent) attempts at the free throw line. Guard Bret Bates scored a game-high 22 points on 6-of-13 shooting and was a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line. In addition to Bates, forward Zefiryn Bryan and guard Brittney Chamberlin added 14 points each.
Offensively, Southwestern leads the KCAC in scoring offense (76.0), scoring margin (9.2) and 3-point field goals made per game (8.2), despite entering the week shooting under 40 percent as a team (39.1 percent).
Bates, the 2011 KCAC Newcomer of the Year award winner, leads the Moundbuilders averaging 17.5 points per game, which ranks second in the conference and 20th nationally. A key to her offensive success comes at the free throw line where she ranks fifth in the NAIA with an 88.7 percent free throw percentage. An all-around player, Bates also averages 2.9 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.1 steals per game this season.
Bryan, a sophomore from Delphos, Ohio, is second on the squad at 11.6 points per game, while leading the team with a 7.2 rebounds per game. She has posted three double-digit rebounding games this season, including a career-high 14 boards against Culver-Stockton (Mo.) on Nov. 5.
Rounding out the Southwestern double-figure scorers is Chamberlin, who averages 11.4 points and a team-high 1.3 steals per game.
After McPherson, SWC remains home for a matchup against conference power Kansas Wesleyan University on Saturday, Jan. 7.
In their last meeting...
Winfield, Kan. (02/06/11) – Receiving votes Southwestern College handed the McPherson College women’s basketball team an 89-62 loss Saturday evening at Stewart Field House.
With the loss, the Bulldogs fall to 5-19 overall and 3-11 in conference play, while Southwestern improves to 17-6 overall and 10-4 in KCAC action.
Southwestern used efficient shooting, as the Builders knocked down 41.3 percent (26-of-63) of its shots, including 10-of-25 (40.0 percent) from beyond the three-point arc. McPherson shot 35.9 percent (23-of-64) from the floor, but was just 1-of-16 from three-point range. On a high note, the Bulldogs converted 15-of-17 (88.2 percent) of attempts from the foul line.
Three Moundbuilders’ scored double digits led by Tylar Hartfield’s game-high 20 points as she hit 8-of-13 attempts from the floor. Brett Bates added 14 points, including a pair of three-pointers to open both halves, while Jasmine Manuel added 10 points.
For the Bulldogs, Madison Chambers (Wellsville, Kan.) and Kristen Ozbun (Rose Hill, Kan.) teamed up to score 14 points apiece, while Brooke Weisenburger (Gardner, Kan.) tallied 11 to round MC’s double figure scorers. Elice Frey led the team with six rebounds.
Southwestern built a 41-26 halftime lead behind strong three-point and free throw shooting. The Builders hit 4-of-10 attempts from beyond the arc and were 11-of-15 from the foul line. Bates set the tone of the half early on when she connected on a pair of three-pointers to open the scoring and spark a 12-4 Builder run.
The Moundbuilders shot 44.8 percent from the floor in the opening period, while forcing 16 Bulldog turnovers.
Southwestern kept on the gas in the second period extending its lead out to 19 following another pair of Bates three-pointers. McPherson kept themselves alive by cutting the deficit to 10 points, 43-53, with 12:58 left after a pair of Chamber’s free throw. However, Southwestern would prove to strong down the stretch en route to the 27-point victory.
McPherson will return to action Thursday night when they travel to Tabor College. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
