Turnovers Doom Bulldogs at RV Southwestern

Box Score Winfield, Kan. – The Builders’ pressure defense forced 27 Bulldog turnovers, as the McPherson College women’s basketball team fell 94-53 at Southwestern College Thursday night at Stewart Field House in Winfield, Kan.
 
With the loss, McPherson falls to 8-7 overall and 3-2 in KCAC play, while Southwestern improves to 10-5 on the year and 4-1 in the league.
 
In addition to ball control problems, the Bulldogs shot 35.6 percent (19-of-52) from the field, including only a 28.6 percent (8-of-28) success rate in the second half. Forward Elice Frey (Riley, Kan.) led three Bulldogs in double figures with 13 points, while guards Brittany Pittas (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) and Kt Porter (Wichita, Kan.) added 11 points and 10 points, respectively.
 
Southwestern finished the contest shooting 50 percent (31-of-62) from the floor, including 17 3-point baskets. Guard Brett Bates paced the Builder offense with 20 points, while guard Kaitlin Tennyson added 12 points and six rebounds.  
 
McPherson took an early lead on back-to-back Frey layups and a Porter jumper, but the Builders answered with two straight 3-pointers to take a 7-6 lead at the 15:28 mark of the opening half. Southwestern continued to stretch its lead behind a barrage of 3-point baskets, including four from Bates.
 
McPherson was within 30-25 after another Frey runner, but Southwestern would outscore the Bulldogs 12-2 over the final four minutes of the period to take a 42-27 lead into the break.
 
Southwestern seized complete control of the contest early in the second half, holding McPherson to only one field goal over the first seven minutes of the period.
 
The Bulldogs return to the road on Saturday evening, as McPherson faces Friends. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. inside the Garvey Center.
