McPherson, Kan. – The men’s soccer team at McPherson College pulled to an even 2-2 conference record after defeating the Spires of the University of Saint Mary 3-1 on Saturday; MC is now 7-4-1 this season.
The Bulldogs controlled the tempo of the game from the get-go, advancing the ball seamlessly through the Spire defense. With how easily MC was handling the game, one would have expected a goal before the 33
rd minute but McPherson couldn’t find the back of the net until
Johnny Nuthall (Reno, Nev.) blasted a ball from 30 yards out for his first goal of the day.
In literally MC’s next possession, Nuthall sped past Saint Mary’s defense and slid his second score in, putting it past three Spires and their goalkeeper. Now holding a two-score lead, McPherson continued to push the tempo into the second half. In the 68
th minute,
Tito Ruiz (Weatherford, Texas) zoomed past USM’s left-back and passed in a brilliant ball which senior
Brooks Walsh (Valencia, Calif.) placed into the goal, making it 3-0 McPherson.
Saint Mary scored in the 82
nd minute to bring them within two goals but the Spires couldn’t score again in the remaining eight minutes giving MC the 3-1 Victory.
Bulldog soccer smashed the ball at the goal on Saturday, posting 32 total shots with 15 on frame.
Michael Phillips (Spring Branch, Texas) led the team in shots with six, three coming in the same possession. Nuthall posted five shots, four on goal while
Heriberto Garcia (Dallas, Texas) put up four attempts with one on target.
Goalkeeper
Taylor Parrott (Wichita, Kan.) had a calm day as he was only required to attempt and stop the ball three times, succeeding twice.
MC soccer will be back on the pitch on Wednesday, October 17 when they travel to Hillsboro, Kansas to take on the Blue Jays of Tabor College; kickoff will be at 7:30 p.m. (CT)
