McPherson, Kan. – In come from behind fashion, the McPherson College women’s soccer team defeated the Lady Spires of the University of Saint Mary 2-1.  The win moves MC to 4-6-2 for the season and 2-2 in the conference.

The two teams clashed back and forth for the opening period with neither team taking any form of advantage.  That changed in the 66th minute when a poor pass was stolen by USM’s Claire Beebe for the first goal of the match.  After that, the Lady Spires seemed to be in total control of the contest, moving the ball as they pleased.

McPherson’s Amy Stockton (Manhattan, Kan.) changed the flow of the game in the 83rd minute when she took a pass from Gabriela Navarro (Wichita, Kan.) and popped the ball towards the top of the goal.  USM’s keeper jumped up, grabbing the ball and then fell backwards into the goal, giving MC the point and tying the game at 1-1.

With this huge momentum shift, the Lady Bulldogs kept in attacking formation and were awarded a penalty kick in the 89th minute thanks to a hand-ball inside the box by one of the Spires.  Cheyna Buchman (McPherson, Kan.), coming off of her two goal performance against Friends University on Wednesday, blasted the free kick past USM’s goal keeper, which gave McPherson the victory 2-1.

Both Buchman and Navarro recorded five shots in Saturday’s contest; all of Buchman’s were on target while Navarro placed two on goal.  As a team, McPherson put up 13 total shots and had 10 that the keeper saved.

MC goalie Molly Whitwell (Plano, Texas) logged four saves in the match.

The Lady Bulldogs will play next on Wednesday the 17th against Tabor College in Hillsboro, Kan.  That match is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. (CT)
