Tight Match Leaves MC with 1-2 Overtime Loss

McPherson, Kan. – An unfortunate loss to inner-county rival Bethany College leaves McPherson College women’s soccer at 5-8-2 for the season and 3-4 in the KCAC, putting them sixth in the conference.

Less than five minutes into the game, the Lady Bulldogs scored their lone goal of the match and it came off of defender Alexandria Paparella (Torrance, Calif.) who blasted in a rebound from about 20 yards out.  McPherson would then go the remainder of the game and overtime without putting a ball past the Bethany goalkeeper.

Bethany’s Tessa Kuhlengel scored the other two goals in the contest and they both came at crucial moments for the Lady Swedes.  Her first was with 18 minutes left in regulation which pushed the match into overtime.  The final point of the game was knocked into the goal with just over one minute left in OT.

The Lady Bulldogs posted more shots than usual as they put 24 towards the goal, placing 13 on target.  Amy Stockton (Manhattan, Kan.) shot an impressive six times, having two on target while Kelli Hlushak (Loveland, Colo.) and Cheyna Buchman (McPherson, Kan.) each logged three that the keeper saved.

Molly Whitwell (Plano, Texas), MC’s goalie, tallied five saves and two goals allowed in the loss.

The MC women’s soccer team will have one final home game of the regular season as they take on the Moundbuilders of Southwestern College on October 27th at 5:00 p.m. (CT) at McPherson Stadium.
