McPherson, Kan. – Bye weeks aren’t always a good thing and McPherson has experienced that twice this season as they fell to the University of Saint Mary 14-26 on “Senior Day.” The defeat puts the Bulldogs at 3-4 for the season and 3-3 in KCAC play.
19 penalties for 190 yards were called on Saturday, 11 went toward the Spires with the other nine coming McPherson’s way. A few calls went for MC, giving them some well-timed first downs. Others allowed USM to continue their drives and put points on the board.
The Bulldogs were out gained in yardage, 270-366, for the first time since week one. The Spires, as advertised, threw the ball all over the field, taking advantage of short crossing patters, gaining 261 yards through the air.
Jake Snodgrass (Derby, Kan.), senior quarterback for Mac, threw the ball 26 times, completing 13 for 185 yards and two touchdowns and one interception. Fellow senior Julius Record (Detroit, Mich.) snatched seven receptions for 140 yards and his sixth touchdown of the year. Byron O'Rourke (Holcomb, Kan.), also a senior, grabbed the other touchdown on a beautiful out-and-up; he finished the game with that lone reception for 10 yards.
The running game for McPherson just couldn’t get going against Saint Mary as MC only tallied 80 ground-gotten yards. The Bulldogs were led by Terrance Jones (Wichita, Kan.) in rushing attempts with 10, he gained 31 yards. Snodgrass took off eight times for 40 yards in the loss.
It seemed that if your last name was Wilson, you had a big defensive game for MC. Jimmy Wilson (Oakland, Calif.) and Phillip Wilson (Long Beach, Calif.) each tallied double-digits in tackles with Jimmy grabbing 16, four solo, and Phillip having 11, eight solo. Micah Roehl (Dighton, Kan.) nearly made it into double figures but fell one short with nine tackles. Brian Doffing (Conway Springs, Kan.) recorded McPherson’s only sack and added seven other tackles to that, totaling eight tackles.
MC will finish out the year on the road as they travel for their remaining two games. The first competition is against the Coyotes of Kansas Wesleyan who are coming off of a 35-14 win over Southwestern. That game is set for 1:30 p.m. (CT) on Saturday, November 3.
