Box Score

McPherson, Kan. – It was a nail-biter volleyball match between McPherson College and Kansas Wesleyan University on Monday and it was the Lady Coyotes who came out victorious in the end.  MC went down 1-3 pushing them to 6-10 in the KCAC and 9-24 overall; the ‘Dogs still hold the sixth place ranking in the conference standings.

The opening game of the match was controlled by KWU from the start jumping out to a 10-4 lead and getting their points in chunks.  The Lady Bulldogs battled back and got within two points a couple of times but could never catch the Coyotes, losing 21-25.

Game two was the complete opposite as McPherson took charge of the tempo and led the majority of the game.  Kansas Wesleyan was never close to taking control and lost the second game 20-25.

After being metaphorically punched in the mouth, the Lady Coyotes came out strong in the third game, battling back and forth with MC.  The game ended with a 7-1 KWU run at 25-17, giving them the 2-1 advantage.

In the most evenly powered game, both teams gave it their all right from the get-go.  Each squad would hold the lead for a few points and then lose it to the other team.  KWU’s largest point advantage came at 6-3 while McPherson’s came at 17-14 but neither team could hold those leads.  The Lady Bulldogs ultimately lost the final game 23-25 giving the overall victory to Kansas Wesleyan 3-1.

Phoebe Barton (Little River, Kan.) had a standout game for McPherson, tallying 13 kills and only one attacking error.  She was second only to Aubrey Hoover (Pratt, Kan.) in total points as Hoover had 14.4 points on 14 kills and two assisted blocks.  Sophie Simon (McPherson, Kan.), the blocking machine, recorded five total blocks, two solo, to go along with her eight kills.

It was a battle between MC’s two setters as to who would end the match with the most assists.  Rachel Phillips (Maize, Kan.) edged out Hannah Hoffman (Bendena, Kan.) with 24; Hoffman tallied 23.

Tiffany Rooker (Hillsboro, Kan.) was all about the digs on Monday as she recorded 17.  Fellow senior Callie McCaffrey (Vona, Colo.) had 10 digs of her own in the senior’s final home game.

Two matches remain for McPherson in the regular season; their next contest will be against the19-14 Friends University Falcons.  That match is scheduled for October 31st at 7:00 p.m. (CT) in Wichita, Kan.
