Lawrence, Kan. – Bulldog basketball got their season started off right with a win against Haskell Indian Nations University on Tuesday 66-54; the victory also keeps alive the hopes of an undefeated season.
Much like the women, McPherson got off to a great start, getting up 22-4 after the first nine minutes of the game. Haskell tried to climb back into the mix of things but could only get within 13 points, trailing 31-18 at halftime. MC only shot 36% from the field in the opening period but a 0-of-7 from three-point land by the Indians allowed McPherson to maintain their lead.
In the second half, again like in the women’s game, HINU came out firing and scored the first nine points of the period. The Indians would keep MC’s lead to single digits but try as the might, were never able to take over the lead. Bulldog basketball extended their lead to double figures in the waning minutes of the game, preserving the victory. Both teams shot considerably better from the field in the second period, McPherson converted on 14-of-29 while the Indians shot 36%.
MC finished the contest shooting 41 percent from the field but was only 6-of-27 from downtown and shot a sub-par 50% from the free throw line. It definitely was a learning game for the Bulldogs as they committed 20 turnovers, 15 of which were self inflicted.
Three McPherson players scored 10 points on Tuesday;
Samson Shivers (Houston, Texas),
Devirous Johnson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and
Jake Reinhardt (Walton, Kan.). Reinhardt added 13 rebounds for the season’s first double-double.
Kasey Miller (Derby, Kan.) drained three of his eight three pointers for nine points while newcomers
Darius Hill (Kansas City, Kan.) Hill and
Dante Lee (Shawnee Mission, Kan.) added eight of their own.
Raymond Eagleboy Whiteshield was the lone Indian that made it into double-digits. 6-8 center Ron Rousseu contributed eight points and led HINU in rebounds with 16.
McPherson will now gear up for their home opener which is scheduled for this Friday, November 2
nd at 8:00 p.m. (CT) against the Bacone College Warriors.
