Lawrence, Kan. – The women’s basketball team won’t have a chance at a perfect season after dropping game one of 2012 to Haskell Indian Nations University 66-77 on Tuesday.
McPherson came out strong, taking a 15-0 lead right from the get-go on 6-of-11 shooting. The Indians battled back and got within eight points but MC kept them at bay, holding on to an 11 point advantage heading into halftime. The Lady Bulldogs ended the half shooting 33 percent from the field and were 6-of-8 from the free throw stripe.
Coming out of the locker room, MC was on the wrong side of a 16-1 run as Haskell came out firing, hitting seven of their first 10 shots. All this scoring happened in the first four minutes of the second period. The two teams would trade points back and forth for the next few minutes but HINU then catapulted ahead of McPherson by as many as 17 points. The Lady Bulldogs put a few points together to get it within 10 but never made it to single digits.
Despite losing the second half, McPherson shot better than they did in the first, posting a 46% field goal percentage. They also did better from long range, making 4-of-10. For the game, MC made 39 percent of their shots and was 13-of-20 from the charity stripe.
25 team turnovers did not help out the Lady Bulldogs; each player that stepped onto the court committed at least one turnover except Krushanda Harrold. McPherson was -12 in the turnover ratio against the Lady Indians.
Brittany Pittas (Chicago, Ill.) had a career game for MC, hitting on 12-of-20 from the field, 6-of-11 from behind the arc, for 32 points; her points, attempted three pointers and made three balls were all career highs. Forwards
Kaylee Cramer (Dighton, Kan.) and
Tayler Puttergill (Tryon, Neb.) each tallied eight points, landing them second best on the squad; both Cramer and Puttergill also totaled six rebounds.
Haskell had three players in double-digits with Sydney Jessepe leading the way with 19. She was closely followed by Ronnea Grambling and Jenine Coriz with 13 and 12, respectively. As a team the Indians shot 41.7% for the game despite making only 8-of-32 in the opening period. HINU turned the ball over quite a bit as well, 19, but were able to get 15 of those back via steals of their own.
McPherson will now head up to Concordia, Nebraska for their next two games as they will participate in the Concordia Classic. Their first game will be against the host school Concordia University who is ranked No. 1 in the Nation in the preseason poll. That contest is set for 8:00 p.m. (CT) on Friday the 2
nd. After MC takes on the top team in the country, they will then face No. 18 Hastings College on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. All games will be live streamed
