McPherson, Kan. – The McPherson women’s soccer team will be hosting Southwestern college for the second time in a week, but this match will be to advance to the semifinals of the conference tournament. The match is set to kickoff at 6:00 p.m. (CT) on Friday the 2nd of November.
October 27th was the last meeting between these two and the Lady Bulldogs were victorious, winning 2-0 on “Senior Day.” Kayla Besmer scored first for MC, heading in a Gabriela Navarro corner kick in the 42nd minute.
McPherson’s second goal came midway through the second period off of another corner kick. This time, it was Cheyna Buchman to Haley Anderson who pushed the ball past the goal line. The two point advantage matched with the tough defense of MC’s backline kept the Lady Builders at bay, giving McPherson the 2-0 win.
The Lady Bulldogs have put the ball past their opponent’s goalie just 19 times this season, ninth in the conference. 26 goals have been allowed by McPherson’s defense, 1.53 a game, which is the fourth best in the KCAC.
Southwestern finished the regular season with an 8-8 record, 4-5 in the conference. They are averaging 2.38 goals per game, second in the KCAC, and have scored 38 times this year. The only problem for SWC is that they allow 31 goals each outing, providing some tight matches.
The leading shot taker for MC is Navarro who has put the ball towards the goal 48 times and placed 22 on target. Buchman leads the squad in goals with five. Goalkeeper Molly Whitwell finished the regular season second in the KCAC in total saves with 107.
For Southwestern, Joy Reyes leads her team in shots (64), shots on goal (33), and goals (10); her goal total is fifth in the conference. Midfielder Kaci Hutchinson has six assists this year which is second best in the KCAC.
The winner of the quarterfinal match will travel to Ottawa, Kan., to take on the Lady Braves of Ottawa University. That game will be on November 6th at 7:00 p.m. (CT)
