The Lady Bulldogs are coming off a much needed win this past Tuesday as they crushed Central Christian College 86-49. After scoring the first basket of the game, McPherson didn’t look back, taking it to the Lady Tigers. A couple of big runs put MC up 47-25 heading into half.
McPherson shot 48.65% from the field on 18-of-37 in the opening period and was 4-of-9 from behind the three-point line; they also hit 7-of-10 from the charity stripe. 18 points were tallied for Mac from the 13 Central Christian turnovers. Ali Brewster really shined in the first half for MC, scoring 15 points and grabbing four rebounds.
In the second period, the Lady Tigers worked as hard as they could to keep McPherson’s lead at just 20 but a 15-1 Lady Bulldog run mid-way through the half put MC up 30; the lead was extended to 40 points a few minutes later but stayed in the high 30s for the remainder of the game.
MC’s shooting percentage dropped a bit in the second half to 34.3%, putting it at 41.7 for the contest. The squad did improve their shooting from the free throw line as they made 11-of-13; they finished the game shooting 78.3% from the stripe. CCC turned the ball over 31 times, 15 of which were stolen by McPherson; the Bulldogs had 21 turnovers of their own. 20 offensive rebounds and 48 total were hulled in by MC.
Brewster scored only two points in the second half, giving her 17 for the game which tied her with Brittany Pittas for the contest’s leading scorer; Brewster hit 6-of-12 and was 5-of-6 from the free throw stripe, she also had eight assists, six rebounds and three steals. It was a team effort for the remaining Bulldog points, all but one player who saw action scored.
MC will next have their first home game of the season on the 20th of November. They will take on MidAmerica Nazarene University at 6:00 p.m. (CT)
Scouting William Penn
The Statesmen are 2-3 this season and are currently on a three-game losing streak with their most recent defeat coming at the hands of Morningside College 69-60.
WPU starters had a rough go against the Mustangs as they only made up 18 of the team’s 60 points. The MC defense held William Penn to just nine free throw attempts and forced 16 turnovers. The Statesmen shot 35.9% from the floor and were 8-of-23 from distance.
Three bench players made it into double-digits for William Penn with Brittany May leading the way with 15 on her 5-of-7 day from behind the arc. Orielle Thomas scored 13 points by shooting the ball a team-high 15 times, making six; she also had 15 rebounds. The final Statesman in double figures was Morgan Evans who had 10, hitting on 4-of-7.
As a team WPU is scoring 61.8 points per contest but allow an average of 68.4 to their opponents. They are currently ranked third in the NAIA D-II in defensive rebounds per game with 33 and are ninth in total rebounds at 47 per contest; the squad has grabbed 235 total rebounds this season, putting them 14th in the Nation.
Guard Katie Golomski is averaging 11 points per outing, shooting 43.5%, leading the team in both categories. Thomas is bringing down an impressive 12.75 rebounds a contest, ranking her fourth in the country; she is also eighth in defensive rebounds a game with 8.25 and 12th in offensive boards at 4.5.
William Penn will take on Bethel College in day two of the Bethel Classic.
Scouting Haskell Indian Nations
After defeating McPherson in their first game of the season, HINU has since lost three straight, putting them at 1-3. The Indians played in Southwestern College’s Tara Patterson Memorial Classic last weekend, losing to both Sterling College (68-64) and Southwestern (88-59).
In their loss to SWC, a poor shooting performance from behind the arc and at the free throw line, kept Haskell from gaining any traction; they were just 5-of-22 from deep and 12-of-21 from the stripe. The 23 turnovers committed by HINU didn’t help either, nor did getting outrebounded 36-48.
Jenine Coriz and Sydney Jessepe led the Indians in scoring, each putting in 15 points; Coriz got the majority of her points from behind the arc, hitting 3-of-6. Post player Jennah Williams was next on the list of scorers for Haskell, scoring eight on 3-of-4 from the floor and 2-of-4 from the charity stripe.
HINU is averaging 67.5 points each time out while giving up 76, hence their 1-3 record. They are making 37.7 percent of their shots from the floor and just 26.8% from behind the arc. Only making 65.6 percent of their attempts from the free throw line is keeping the Indians from winning tight games. Haskell is also getting outrebounded by just over 10 rebounds a contest but are turning the ball over 18.75 times a game, third best in the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference.
Jessepe is bucketing 14.75 points each time on the court, making 41.3% of her attempts. Coriz is placed 15th in the NAIA D-II in steals per game with 3.75 and 17th in total steals at 15.
The Lady Indians will be guests to the University of Saint Mary for their next competition.
