Baldwin City, Kan. – The Bulldogs have now taken down Haskell Indian Nations twice this year, this time it took two overtime periods for McPherson to do it.
Samson Shivers (Houston, Texas) shook off his cold streak to hit the game-winning three pointer from the corner as time expired, giving MC the 93-92 victory.
This was a very close contest from the start; McPherson was down by a handful of points throughout the first half but never down more than five and headed into the locker room trailing 33-34. HINU went 11-of-24 in the first period and hit nine of their 11 free throws to keep the Bulldogs playing catch-up. MC shot the ball 10 more times than the Indians but made the same amount of shots, 11-of-34. A 35.3% shooting half from behind the arc allowed Mac to stay in the game.
The second period was just as close and intense as the first with both teams trading the lead back and forth; six ties and multiple lead changes occurred throughout the half. McPherson held the largest lead of five points but Shivers was unable to hit the game-winning shot to end the contest in regulation, taking the game into its first overtime.
Haskell had a solid shooting performance, draining 14 of their 25 buckets from the field; the Indians continued to hit their shots from the charity stripe, going 7-of-11 for the period. The Bulldogs stayed consistent in the second period, making 13-of-36 field goals.
In the first overtime, McPherson held the lead for the entire period as HINU was only able to tie the game, doing so three times with the last one coming with under five seconds remaining.
