Columbia, Mo. – In the second day of the Columbia College Classic, McPherson College took on the host school Columbia Cougars. CC shot lights-out on their home court, defeating the Bulldogs 96-60. MC is now 5-4 this season after going 1-1 in the classic.
The two teams spent the opening minutes of the game feeling each other out; there were multiple ties and a couple lead changes before a 20-2 run by Columbia, starting at the 13 minute mark, gave the Cougars a 19-point advantage. MC fought back and pulled within 10 points but never got into single digits for the remainder of the contest. CC was halfway to 100 at the sound of the halftime buzzer and took a 50-31 lead into the locker room.
Both squads shot well from the floor in the opening period, McPherson put in 12 of their 29 shots but it was no match for the 64.3 percentage posted by Columbia; the Cougars were 18-of-28 from the field and 7-of-10 from distance. MC drained 5-of-13 from beyond the arc in the first half.
The score stayed at a 20-point distance in favor of CC for the majority of the second period. Columbia extended their advantage to 30 with just over five minutes to go in the contest. McPherson’s deficit never hit 40 points and the Bulldogs found themselves down 36 as the clock hit 00:00 with the score at 96-60.
McPherson shot well for the first 15 minutes of the second period but saw their percentage dip as they took desperation shots in the last part of the game; MC converted on just 7-of-20 from the field but was 55.6% from distance and made 10-of-12 from the charity stripe. The sharp-shooting of Columbia continued in half number two as the Cougars nailed 18-of-28 for the second-straight period. CC shot one more three pointer but made the same number of balls from deep as they did in the first half, hitting 7-of-11.
The Bulldogs ended the game shooting 45.5 percent from beyond the three-point line and were 19-of-49 from the floor; the squad hit a commendable 80% of their free throw attempts. Columbia bested all of McPherson’s percentages, making 66.7 percent of their shots from deep and 64.3 from the floor; the Cougars also only missed once from the charity stripe, making 10-of-11.
Dante Lee (Shawnee Mission, Kan.) went 6-of-14 from the field including hitting 50% of his three point shots, going 5-of-10, to lead McPherson in points with a season-high 18.
Samson Shivers (Houston, Texas) and
Darius Hill (Kansas City, Kan.) each totaled 12 points; Hill had a 100% field goal percentage, hitting 5-of-5, and also made 2-of-3 from the stripe.
Columbia ended the game with five players making it into double-digits. The team was led by Zach Rockers who came in off the bench and recorded 24 points by hitting on 8-of-10 from distance. He was immediately followed by Devin Griffin who bucketed 23. Jordan Dressler, Tanner Sutton, and Brock Waller were the final Cougars to score over 10 points.
McPherson will now get set for KCAC play as their first conference matchup of the season is scheduled for November 29
th in Lindsborg, Kansas against the Swedes of Bethany College; tipoff is at 8:00 p.m. (CT)
