McPherson, Kan. – McPherson College, playing host to the Lady Jays of Tabor College on Saturday night, found themselves on the wrong side of a 66-56 score line when the final buzzer sounded. The loss moves MC to 5-5 for the season and 1-1 in the KCAC.
Two days ago, the Lady Bulldogs held Bethany College without a field goal for just over eight minutes; tonight, McPherson played the opposite role, scoring for the first time at the 13:48 mark of the game. Tabor was able to amass a 14-point advantage by that time and held the double-digit lead for the remainder of the half, leading 34-21 heading into the locker room.
Not a single Bulldog made two field goals in the opening period as seven different players scored. Going just 7-of-27 from the field in the first half made it difficult for MC to gain any traction and kept them from obtaining the lead; they were just 2-of-9 from distance and hit on 5-of-9 from the charity stripe. TC made 11-of-24 for a 45.8 field goal percentage in the opening half.
The second period was much more evenly matched as the lead for the Lady Blue Jays stayed around the 10-point mark. McPherson was never down by more than 13 but was not able to get any closer than six points. Tabor hit 8-of-10 from the free throw line in the last few minutes to keep their lead and MC at bay.
The Bulldogs shot the ball better in the second half but it wasn’t enough to get them the game; they went 10-of-29 from the floor but again, just made two three balls, hitting 2-of-9. The Blue Jays kept up their shooting percentage, making 47.8% of their attempts; Tabor ended the game shooting 46.8 percent from the field and 37.5 from distance. McPherson was able to force 20 TC turnovers, stealing 11 of them. The Lady Jays outrebounded MC 38-36 but gave up 15 offensive boards to the Bulldogs.
Cheyenne Eisenhour (Stafford, Kan.),
Brittany Pittas (Chicago, Ill.) and
Ali Brewster (Milton, Kan.) each scored double figures in the loss for McPherson. Eisenhour got the bulk of her points from the stripe, hitting 6-of-11 free throws and ended the night with 13. Pittas went just 2-of-8 from downtown and was 2-of-6 from the rest of the floor, mix that with her 2-of-2 shooting from the charity stripe makes her 12 points. Brewster scored 10 on 3-of-8 from the field and 3-of-6 from the free throw line.
Madison Chambers (Wellsville, Kan.) upped her rebounding average after grabbing 14 boards in the game, 10 in the first half; she scored eight points in the loss.
Nikki Lewis led the Blue Jays in scoring with a game-high 17 points; she also tallied eight assists. Janelle Rust was right on her season average as she scored 15 points on 4-of-8 shooting; she also recorded 15 rebounds and three blocks.
MC will now prepare for their road trip up to Ottawa, Kan., and the OU Lady Braves. That game is scheduled for December 6
