Winfield, Kan. – McPherson women’s basketball couldn’t get any shots to fall on Saturday, making a season-low 21.9% of their attempts. Southwestern took advantage and took the game 71-51.
The first period got off to a slow start for the first few minutes but a 10-2 run by the Bulldogs put MC up 12-6 at the 14-minute mark. SWC was not about to be defeated in their home gym, answering back with a 20-2 run of their own, spanning roughly six minutes and putting the score at 26-14. McPherson kept their deficit around 10 points until their 5-0 run pulled the score within seven with just a couple of minutes left. SWC would score the final six points of the half, putting the score at 35-22.
MC forced some shots in the first half, putting their shooting percentage at 19.4; they took 31 shots, making six, three of which were from behind the arc. The Bulldogs’ 7-of-9 from the charity stripe, kept them in the game. Southwestern, playing their high-tempo style of game, shot the ball 32 times and drained 13 of their attempts. MC hit the glass hard in the opening period, grabbing 28 rebounds with 10 coming on the offensive glass. Turnovers were a problem for Mac as they committed 10 in the game’s first 20 minutes.
The second half began with a foul-happy first five minutes as 10 fouls were called, five going each way. Southwestern would stay in front by 10-15 points until there were six minutes remaining in the game. The Lady Builders took advantage of the length, shooting the ball over MC, despite some good defense by the Lady ‘Dogs. McPherson also had a lot of “bunny” shots not fall for them, hurting any chance of climbing back into the game. SWC kept their lead around the 20-point mark for the final five minutes of the contest.
Mac improved their shooting in the final period, making 8-of-32 from the field and 12-of-16 from the stripe; they continued to struggle from deep as they only hit 1-of-8. MC also took care of the ball much better in the second half, only turning the ball over four times. The Builders kept up their consistent shooting, making 44.4% of their attempts; they converted on 9-of-15 from the free throw line for their second-straight 60 percentage half.
The Lady Bulldogs made just 21.9 percent of their 64 shot attempts in the loss. A 76 free throw percentage will help their season average as they hit on 19-of-25. SWC ended the game shooting 42.4% from the field and 60% from the charity stripe. Southwestern scored the majority of their points in the paint, putting in 46. The Moundbuilders outrebounded MC 51-46 but the Bulldogs pulled in more offensive boards, grabbing 16 to Southwestern’s 12.
