McPherson Kan. – A career scoring performance by Freshman
Ali Brewster (Milton, Kan.) is overshadowed by the Bulldogs inability to stop the Falcon’s offense as McPherson gives up 20 points more than their season average, falling 67-86. Brewster had 14 points which doubles her previous career best of seven in the losing effort.
The loss to Friends drops the Bulldog’s record to 8-7 in the conference and 13-12 overall. For Friends, tonight went from being a good night to a great one as co-number one Southwestern was defeated by Kansas Wesleyan, 51-57, in Salina. This will give the Falcons full ownership of first place in the KCAC with their record of 13-2, 19-8 overall. The conference crown is now theirs to lose.
The night was not as pleasant for head coach Cy Rolfs and the Lady Bulldogs as they had a poor shooting performance on their usually charitable home rims. McPherson shot 35.2 percent from the field which is nearly five percent from their season average of 39.3. MC also got out-rebounded 39 to 47 and was kept off the offensive glass by Friends’ 32 defensive rebounds.
Brewster’s career day was the biggest bright spot for McPherson. She not only had a career high in points but in free-throws and field goals made as well as in rebounds. Brewster hit on 5-of-6 from the free-throw stripe, was 4-of-6 from the field and had six rebounds, four of which were on the offensive end. McPherson had two other athletes scoring in double figures,
Elice Frey (Riley, Kan.)(13) and
Kt Porter (Wichita, Kan.) (11).
Friends University was led by their season’s top scorer, Abby Fawcett. Fawcett scored 28 points on 9-of-19 shooting for a field goal percentage of 47.4. She also had 12 rebounds and a career high, nine assists. This was the first double-double of the 2011-2012 season for Fawcett. She wasn’t the only Falcon to record a double-double tonight, forward Jessika Crews grabbed 10 boards and scored 12 points to aid in the Friends victory. Senior Jacque Dean made the double-digits for scoring on 6-of-6 shooting, including hitting two from three-point land, she had 14 points.
As a team, Friends went 48.5 percent from the field and were 9-of-10 from behind the arc for a percentage of 45. That three-point percentage is almost 20 percent better than their season average which sat at 28.6 percent before tonight’s contest. The Falcons were also 72 percent from the free-throw line.
McPherson ended the night 25-of-71 from the field and converted just six of their 23 three-point attempts for a percentage of 26.1. The Bulldogs shot 10 more times from the three than their season average, but were only able to convert two more than their average number of makes. MC shot right around their season average of 65.3 percent from the charity stripe at 64.7 percent.
The Bulldogs won’t get long to linger on this loss as they make the trip up to Salina to face Kansas Wesleyan on Saturday. That game will tipoff at 5 p.m. (CT)
