Lady Bulldogs go 3-1 at Sterling Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4 Hutchinson, Kan. – The McPherson softball team traveled to Hutchinson, Kansas for the Sterling College Softball Tournament on Friday and Saturday.  The Lady Bulldogs went 3-1 on the weekend, defeating Haskell Indian Nations 9-1, Mid-American Christian 5-4, and Southwestern Christian 11-6; MC lost to Oklahoma Wesleyan 0-9.
 
Friday, Game One: McPherson 9 – Haskell Indian Nations 1

The Lady Bulldogs got the weekend started off right with a victory against Haskell Indian Nations.  MC surrendered one run in the opening inning but did not allow another the rest of the game.  Allison Love (Tulsa, Okla.) recorded the complete game for McPherson and tallied five strikeouts and 10 groundouts in the 25 batters she faced. 
 
The bats were rolling for MC as they grabbed 15 for the matchup, including three triples and three doubles.  Katie Logan (Clay Center, Kan.) and Amanda Baxter (Pueblo, Colo.) each had three hits in their four at bats; Logan recorded a triple while Baxter earned a double and hit in three runs.  Six other Bulldogs had at least one hit.
 
Haskell sent Kendall Calderon to the mound to face MC and she also pitched a complete game, allowing eight earned runs and three walks while striking out two.
 
After knocking the ball into play twice in the opening inning, HIU was only able to hit two more the rest of the contest.  Ashleigh Brown was the only Haskell player to stretch her hit into a double.
 
Friday, Game Two: McPherson 0 – Oklahoma Wesleyan 9

Hitting struggles plagued McPherson in the second game of the weekend, only earning three.  Logan recorded two of the Bulldog hits, Brittany Cole (Belton, Mo.) logged the other. 
 
Kaci Nichols (Wilson, Kan.) started the game for MC and went two and two thirds innings, giving up five runs, three earned, and six hits.  Cole came in relief in the third inning and finished the game, allowing four runs and seven hits in her 17 batters faced.
 
13 hits were earned by Oklahoma Wesleyan in their win, with three doubles and two homeruns.  Four Eagles logged two hits and five others had one.  Allison Edwards led OKWU in RBIs with two.
 
Katie Kelly pitched the complete game for Oklahoma Wesleyan, surrendering zero runs, three hits and only one walk.  Kelly had five strikeouts in the 20 batters she faced.
 
Saturday, Game One McPherson 5 – Mid-America Christian University 4

For the second day in a row, McPherson won their first game of the day and did so in a nine-inning thriller.  Trailing the majority of the game, Kristen Gustafson (Overland Park, Kan.) hit a hard ground ball to second and MC’s Sadie Green (Hutchinson, Kan.) scored on an error by MACU’s second baseman to tie the game at three to force extra innings. 
 
The teams traded runs in the eighth inning with McPherson’s coming from a single shot to center by catcher Baxter who had thrown out two Eagles that were stealing earlier in the inning.  The Lady Bulldogs went 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth throwing out, popping out and striking out the Mid-America players to have a chance to win the game in the bottom of the ninth.  Courtney Shald (Coffeyville, Kan.) had the game winning hit on a bunt single that forced a throwing error by MACU pitcher to bring around Sydney Lipton (Wellington, Kan.) to make the score 5-4 McPherson.
 
Nine hits were tallied by the Lady Bulldogs, Shald led the team with three; Green and Logan each recorded two. 
The nine-inning victory went to Al. Love who pitched the complete game, allowing only four runs, one earned, on seven hits and walking only one batter; this is her seventh CG for the season.
 
Mid-America had seven batters each get one hit; Ashley Dodson was the only Eagle to record a double. 
MACU also only used one pitcher as Amber Tinney logged the complete game.  She recorded four strikeouts, and only one walk in her 35 batters faced.
 
Saturday, Game 2: McPherson 11 – Southwestern Christian 6

Box Score

A quick three run first inning sparked the Lady Bulldogs and after SCU tied up the game in the third, McPherson responded with seven runs in the final three innings.  The sticks were working for MC in this contest, gaining 11 hits from nine players.  Cole and Baxter led the team with three, each also earning a double.  Shald, Taylor Medler (Collinsville, Texas), Gunther and Logan tallied two apiece with three others hitting one to round out the McPherson hits.
 
The starting pitcher for the Lady Bulldogs was Nichols and she went two and two thirds, allowing four runs, one earned, four hits and a double.  She was replaced in the third by Al. Love who closed out the game for MC.  Al. Love struck out one and surrendered two runs in her four and a third innings to pick up the win.
 
Southwestern Christian had two Eagles with two hits, Kayla Millette and Wynter Wind and four others with one, making up their eight total hits.  Millette also hit in two runs to lead SCU in RBIs.
 
Hillary Kuestersteffen was the starter on the mound and pitched a complete game, giving up five earned runs off of 17 hits including a triple and two doubles.
 
 
McPherson is now off until March 31st when they will begin KCAC play against Kansas Wesleyan University.  The double-header will be played at Wall Park in McPherson, Kan., at 5 p.m. (CT)
