Bulldogs and Swedes Split Softball Series

Lindsborg, Kan. – The McPherson College softball team split the double-header against county-rival Bethany College.  The Lady Bulldogs took the first game 3-2 while the Lady Swedes defeated MC in game two, 4-1.

Game One: McPherson 3 – Bethany 2

The first game of the night started with a bang as Janie Gunther (Scott City, Kan.) hit one over the fence to give the Lady Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.  Bethany answered back in the second but McPherson took advantage of a costly error by the Lady Swedes to score their final two runs, making it a 3-1 contest.  BC was able to grab one more run in the bottom of the sixth courtesy of a Jamie Franco RBI single but could not tie the game, giving MC the victory.

Katie Logan (Clay Center, Kan.) found her hitting groove, putting the ball into play in three of her four at bats to lead the Lady Bulldogs.  Gunther recorded two hits, the homerun in the first and a single in the third.  Three others had one.

Allison Love (Tulsa, Okla.) logged her ninth complete game of the season, surrendering two runs, one earned, seven hits and one walk.  She tallied one strikeout, two fly outs and eight groundouts.

Seven different players for Bethany recorded a hit in the game one loss. 

BC sent Jennifer Garcia to the mound to face the Bulldogs, she allowed eight hits, three runs and one walk in her complete game.  Garcia picked up seven strikeouts, four fly outs and three groundouts.

Game Two: McPherson 1 – Bethany 4

Bethany took advantage of a throwing error by the Lady Bulldogs in the opening inning to grab a one run lead to start game two.  McPherson got on the board in the third when a double by Ariel McGee (Denver, Colo.) brought around Logan, putting the score at 1-2.  BC would score two more runs in the fourth and held the Lady Bulldogs hitless the rest of the way.

MC had a difficult time putting bat on ball in the second game of the series, as they only earned three hits.  Logan, McGee and designated hitter Amanda Baxter (Pueblo, Colo.) were the three Bulldogs to put the ball in play.

The first McPherson pitcher to take the mound was Kaci Nichols (Wilson, Kan.) who pitched four innings, allowed four runs, one earned, and six hits.  She was replaced in the fifth inning by Brittany Cole (Belton, Mo.) who closed out the game for MC, giving up two hits and no runs in the six batters she faced.

The Lady Swedes put together eight hits in their game two victory.  Brittany Lewis and Andrea Werner each recorded two while four others had one.

Hollind Englert started the second game for Bethany and pitched her seventh complete game of the season.  She allowed one earned run off of three hits and three walks.  Englert logged five strikeouts in her 24 batters faced.

The Lady Bulldog softball team will be on the road again on Thursday, April 5 as they head to Hillsboro, Kan., to face the Blue Jays of Tabor College.  Their double-header matchup is set to begin at 5 p.m. (CT)
