McPherson, Kan. – To kick off the 2012 regular season, both soccer squads at McPherson College will travel to York, Nebraska to take on the York College Panthers.  The women’s game will begin at 2 p.m. with the men to follow at 4 p.m. (CT)

Head women’s coach Rob Talley is beginning his fifth season at the helm.  After finishing last year third in the KCAC with a 10-9-1 overall record, 6-2-1 in the conference, the team is looking to conclude the 2012 season at the top.

Seven starters return from last year but it will be a freshman heavy squad with 13; there are also only three seniors.  A few of the returners include goalkeeper Molly Whitwell (Plano, Texas), midfielders Jennifer Carlson (Kansas City, Mo.) and Cheyna Buchman (McPherson, Kan.) and forward Stephanie Cornell (Colorado Springs, Colo.).

The NAIA No. 38 men’s soccer team, led by 10th year head coach Doug Quint is looking to rebound after a disappointing 11-7-1 record and need to have a good start to the 2012 campaign.  MC will be looking to their six returning starters for support and leadership.

Leading the list of returners is defender Michael Phillips (Spring Branch, Texas) who enters his senior season as a Bulldog.  Fellow senior Brooks Walsh (Valencia, Calif.) is the top returning scorer for the squad after netting the ball eight times and having seven assists last year.  Other returners include Oscar Cortez (Dallas, Texas) and 2011 All-KCAC first team member Eddie Garcia.

Having already played in two scrimmages during the preseason, against Allen County Community College and the Alumni game, the Bulldogs are eager to get the regular season going.  After the games this weekend, the Lady Bulldogs will be on the road again and take on Fort Hays State University on September 5th in Hays, Kan.  The men's team is off until September 8th when they travel up to Iowa to take on Briar Cliff University.
