McPherson, Kan. – Following their shutout of Bethany, RV McPherson football now faces the Moundbuilders of Southwestern in their second KCAC game of the season. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. on September 15th.
The game will be broadcasted live on the KCAC Digital Network and at macbulldogs.com. You can also listen live to Nick Gosnell on 96.7 KBBE MidKansas Radio and at macbulldogs.com.
When the Bulldogs took down their inner-county rivals of Bethany in football, McPherson’s defense made the largest impact by forcing four turnovers. The win moved MC's record to 1-1, 1-0 in the conference and dropped Bethany to 1-1, 0-1 in the KCAC and out of the NAIA top-25.
Junior defensive end Chris Ellison rolled over the Swede's five man front, recording two sacks and four total tackles and is now ranked fifth in the Nation in tackles for a loss per game at 2.3. The defensive backs for the Bulldogs were kept busy by the air attack of BC and responded with three interceptions and allowed just 135 passing yards. Cornerback Allen Colbert’s two picks puts him fourth in the NAIA in interceptions per game (1) and seventh in total interceptions (2).
On the offensive side of the ball, MC moved up and down the field with ease and could have scored a few more time if it hadn't been for a couple poor-timed turnovers. Running back Havelock Pomele recorded both of the games' touchdowns, one coming on a two-yard plunge and the other on a breakaway run. Pomele ended the game with 60 yards coming on 17 carries.
Quarterback Jake Snodgrass followed up his KCAC Player-of-the-Week performance with an 18-of-27 day for 166 yards. He also rushed for 60 yards on 10 carries.
Julius Record was yet again Snodgrass' favorite target, logging eight receptions; Record’s week two total puts him in second place in the NAIA for receptions per game (11) and third in total receptions (22). Five other Bulldogs caught two passes against Bethany.
After this week’s matchup with the Moundbuilders, McPherson will get ready for their September 22nd showdown with the Friends University Falcons. The game will be played at McPherson Stadium and is scheduled for 7 p.m. (CT)
Scouting Southwestern
The Moundbuilders make the trip up to McPherson after a strong showing against the Bethel Threshers last Saturday, winning 27-13. The victory was much needed for SWC as their first game of the year was a blowout loss to Northwestern (Iowa) 0-49.
Leading the way for Southwestern's offense against Bethel was Anthony Sims who rushed for 147 yards and a touchdown on 22 attempts. Jacobi Johnson put in 70 yards rushing on 17 carries.
In the passing game, Jordan Barrett threw for 92 yards on 10-of-23. The lone receiving touchdown was caught by Joe Vargas who ended the day with five catches for 56 yards.
Defensively, Ttorbin Harper and Brandon Priest each logged eight total tackles; one of Harper’s was for a loss and Priest also forced a fumble. Paul Mata had seven tackles in the game, five of which were solo stops.
This season, Johnson has a total of 152 yards rushing in his two games, four more than his teammate Sims whose game against Bethel was his first of the year. Barrett leads the team with three total touchdowns, two rushing and one passing; he also has recorded 124 aerial yards. Vargas’ five catches in the Bethel game places him atop the leader board for the Builders in receptions.
Mata and Priest each have totaled 22 tackles for the season, both have five solo and 17 assisted. SWC has yet to intercept a pass in 2012 but has two sacks and 8.5 tackles for a loss; they also have six forced fumbles.
Next on the docket for Southwestern is a home contest against the Sterling College Warriors. They are scheduled to play on September 22nd at 6 p.m. (CT) at Richard L. Jantz Stadium in Winfield, Kan.
