McPherson, Kan. – The women’s soccer team grabbed their first win of the 2012 season, defeating Central Christian College 3-1 on Thursday’s Support Ongoing Cancer Research (SOCR) game. The win puts MC at 1-2-2 overall.
Just over 20 minutes into the game, Mercedes Soto (Lewisville, Texas), who came in due to an injury, blasted the ball from 25 yards out for the first goal of the year for MC. Stephanie Cornell (Colorado Springs, Colo.) placed a ball in the back of the net in the 51st minute and Cheyna Buchman (McPherson, Kan.) joined in the action with a goal of her own nine minutes later.
26 total shots were booted towards the goal by the Lady Bulldogs, 12 of which were on target.
Senior goalkeeper Molly Whitwell (Plano, Texas) added seven to her season total saves, putting her at 44.
Soccer is taking six days off before their next match which is against No. 9 Baker University. The match will take place on September 19th in Baldwin City, Kansas at 5 p.m. (CT)
