McPherson, Kan. – Despite holding two early leads, MC volleyball lost 0-3 to Saint Mary.  The loss to the Spires moves McPherson to 2-12 overall and 1-3 in the conference.  USM is now 5-6 for the season, 2-2 in the KCAC.

The first game of the match was close in the beginning until Saint Mary went on a 3-14 run to finish the 25-12 opening game. 

McPherson held a 16-10 lead in game two but another huge run, 5-15, by the Spires gave them the win in the closest game of the match, 25-21.

Game three, which turned out to be the final game of the match, was a back-and-forth battle with the two teams trading points left and right.  USM came out the victor after a final 4-0 run, making the score 25-20.

Junior setter Rachel Phillips (Maize, Kan.) had a great night setting, recording 18 assists with only one setting error.  Freshman phenom Aubrey Hoover (Pratt, Kan.) tallied 12 kills to go with her one solo block and one assisted block; her hitting percentage was 45%.  Tori Phelan (Rangely, Colo.) logged nine kills and one block assist for the match.

The LaQuinta - Kansas Wesleyan Invitational is next on the docket for McPherson.  The squad makes the short trip to Salina, Kansas for two matches on Friday, September 21 and two more on Saturday.  Friday’s contests are set for 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. (CT) against Peru State and Saint Gregory’s, respectively.  Saturday, the Lady Bulldogs will take on Missouri Valley at 11 a.m. and Columbia College at 5 p.m.
