McPherson, Kan. – In a game that came down to the final 10 seconds, the Friends Falcons squeezed by McPherson 18-17. MC is now 2-2 overall, 2-1 in the KCAC while Friends moves to 3-1, 2-0 in the conference.
McPherson controlled the game from the get-go, holding onto possession for 35 minutes compared to the 25 of the Falcons. The game came down to the wire and got interesting in the closing minutes when a 46 yard pass from Friends’ James Bristow to Chris Allen was wrestled away from Bulldog defender Trea Lott (Sterling, Kan.) and landed the Falcons on the two-yard line with 20 seconds remaining. After a rush attempt by Friends was stopped, Bristow spiked the ball with 11 seconds left in the game. A quick slant attempt was tipped by a McPherson defensive lineman and ended up in the hands of offensive lineman Cortlin Couture for a Falcon touchdown with 00:09 showing on the game clock. A series of pitches by the Bulldogs was not fruitful and ended the game at 17-18.
Both teams had off days when it came to yardage with only 515 total yards for the teams combined; McPherson put up 520 on their own last week against Southwestern. However, neither Friends nor McPherson had a problem racking up penalty yardage as they collectively recorded 183 yards on 15 penalties.
Jake Snodgrass (Derby, Kan.) was 14-of-26 for 176 yards with one interception and one touchdown; his one pick was returned 100 yards by Marcus Carter for a touchdown. Snodgrass found Julius Record (Detroit, Mich.) five times for 32 yards. James Patton (Cunningham, Kan.) racked up the most yards receiving for MC with 72 on his two catches.
Terrance Jones (Wichita, Kan.) followed up his 100-yard game with 63 and a touchdown in the loss on Saturday. Snodgrass added 36 yards and Havelock Pomele (San Jose, Calif.) threw in 21.
Freshman Tyler Bruton (McPherson, Kan.) led the Bulldogs in tackles with 10 total, five solo and five assisted; he also recorded one sack for a loss of eight yards. Phillip Wilson (Long Beach, Calif.), Lott and Micah Roehl (Dighton, Kan.) each tallied nine tackles. Chris Barnes (Los Angeles, Calif.) totaled one and a half sacks on the day to go with his four tackles.
McPherson will look to bounce back against Bethel College on Saturday, September 29th. That game is scheduled to be played in North Newton, Kansas at 7 p.m. (CT)
