McPherson, Kan. – Facing some stiff competition, the McPherson College volleyball team went 1-3 in the LaQuinta-KWU Invitational Tournament. The Lady Bulldogs are now 3-15 for the 2012 season.
In the opening match, MC drew Peru State College out of Peru, Nebraska and took down the Bobcats in five games (21-25, 25-23, 25-21, 16-25, 15-8). getting the tournament off on the right track.
The Lady Bulldogs were led by three freshmen in kills, Aubrey Hoover (Pratt, Kan.), Cortlyne Huppe (Florence, Colo.) and Sophie Simon (McPherson, Kan.) with 20, 14 and 10, respectively. Both Rachel Phillips (Maize, Kan.) and Hannah Hoffman (Bendena, Kan.) tallied 23 assists in the five-game match.
The late match of day one pitted McPherson with the Saint Gregory’s Cavaliers. MC led early in each game but was unable to take down SGU, losing 1-3 (23-25, 25-23, 30-32, 19-25).
Huppe put down 14 kills and Hoover added 11. Hoffman grabbed one more assist (23) than Phillips (22) in the contest.
On day two, MC took on Missouri Valley College in the 11 a.m. slot. The Bulldogs, facing Mo. Valley for the second time this season, took one game and nearly two, but were defeated by the Lady Vikings1-3 (20-25, 7-25, 25-20, 25-27).
Sophomore Tori Phelan (Rangely, Colo.) took the spotlight with her 12 kills and was closely followed by Huppe who had 10. Hoffman posted 21 assists while Phillips logged 17.
The Lady Bulldogs went up against the third ranked team in the Nation Columbia College for their final match of the tournament. McPherson was taken down by the Cougars in three-straight games (11-25, 15-25, 17-25).
MC was only able to record 12 total kills against Columbia and were led by Huppe who had four.
This coming week will give McPherson three home matches and one on the road. The Lady Bulldogs start things off against Sterling College on September 25th at 7 p.m. (CT) in McPherson, Kan. MC then travels to Winfield, Kan., to take on the Moundbuilders of Southwestern on Thursday the 27th before a triangular against Ottawa University and Southwestern Christian University on Saturday the 29th in McPherson.
