Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 McPherson, Kan. – Ottawa University and Southwestern Christian University traveled to McPherson, Kan., for a triangular volleyball match with host school McPherson College on Saturday.  OU ended the day 2-0, MC was 1-1, and SWCU went 0-2.

In their opening match of the triangular, McPherson took on the KCAC leading Lady Braves.  Ottawa controlled the first game, going up 8-1 to start things off.  The closest MC got was 5-10 but OU put together another steak, jumping out to a 21-7 lead.  Ottawa finished the match ahead by a 16 point margin at 25-9.

Another OU managed contest awaited the Lady Bulldogs in game two.  Ottawa took the first point and never relinquished the lead.  McPherson was only able to grab a point here-and-there and couldn’t string together more than two points.  The Lady Braves took a two-game advantage after a 25-12 victory.

In the final game of the match, McPherson came out fighting as they took the lead on the first point and didn’t give it up until Ottawa put together three straight points putting them in front 14-13.  The Lady Bulldogs were able to tie the game twice but never led again.  Despite a late surge from MC, Ottawa scored the last two points to win the game (25-21) and match.

The usually consistent freshman duo of Aubrey Hoover (Pratt, Kan.) and Cortlyne Huppe (Florence, Colo.) were only able to record four kills each against the Lady Braves.  The squad barely had a positive hitting percentage at 1.1% for the match.  Fellow freshman Sophie Simon (McPherson, Kan.) tallied four total blocks, three assisted to go with her one kill.

In their second match of the day, McPherson was firing on all cylinders.  In game one, the Lady Bulldogs allowed the Eagles to stay close until the score was 9-8 and then MC took off, scoring 16 points to SWCU’s eight, winning 25-16.

Game two was more of the same for Southwestern Christian, who lost 1-3 earlier in the day to Ottawa University.  McPherson went on a 13-3 run to finish the game 25-12, going up 2-0 in the match.

Desperate not to get swept, the Lady Eagles battled fervently, not allowing MC to get any sort of lead.  SWCU went on a five-point run to take the lead at 12-10 but McPherson calmly climbed back, taking the lead for the final time at 13-12 and finished the game on a 12-5 run, winning 25-17.

Hoover, once again led the team in kills with 16, she also had one assisted block.  Huppe had a standout game one against the Eagles and ended the match with eight kills.  Outside hitter Tori Phelan (Rangely, Colo.) added in seven kills on 20 attempts.

Rachel Phillips (Maize, Kan.) put up 22 assists and Hannah Hoffman (Bendena, Kan.) had half of that with 11.

The Lady Bulldogs now get a few days rest before they face Kansas Wesleyan University on October 2nd in Salina, Kansas at 7:00 p.m. (CT)
