Bulldogs Come From Behind; Get 1st KCAC Win

Salina, Kan. – McPherson College got their first conference win of the 2012-13 season as they took down Kansas Wesleyan University 73-66.  MC moves to 7-11 overall and 1-6 with the victory.
 
The Coyotes got up early in the first half, leading 9-2 in the first four minutes.  Ten minutes later, after an abundant of turnovers by both teams, McPherson found themselves down by 13 but rallied back to a three-point deficit at halftime.  KWU went into the locker room ahead 27-24.
 
Neither team shot the ball well in the game’s first 20 minutes, MC was just 8-of-29 with 4-of-17 of those coming from downtown; a perfect 4-of-4 was recorded by the Bulldogs in half number one.  The Coyotes shot the ball slightly better, making 30% of their 30 shots and 7-of-11 from the charity stripe.  Each team had a tough time hanging on to the ball as 20 total turnovers were tallied in the opening period; McPherson was responsible for 12 of those TOs.  Freshman guard Kyle Lakin (Oklahoma City, Okla.), who was given the assignment of guarding the KCAC’s leading scorer Cannon Fields, accumulated three fouls in the first half.
 
KWU came out in the second half controlling the pace and maintaining their advantage; they led by a handful of points but couldn’t push it to double-digits.   A 9-0 run by McPherson tied the game at 42 with 11:32 remaining; the two teams would trade baskets for the next few minutes and with 7:31 on the clock, McPherson took the lead and didn’t give it back for the rest of the game.  The Bulldogs got ahead by as many as 11 on a couple of occasions with the last one coming with under one-minute remaining.  Quick buckets by the Coyotes brought the distance between the two to four points but MC went 3-of-4 from the stripe to close out the 73-66 victory.
 
An amazing 56.7% shooting percentage was tallied by MC in the second period as they converted on  17-of-30 but only made three shots from distance; going 12-of-15 from the stripe helped propel the Bulldogs to their win.  KWU hit on 10-of-23 from the floor including 3-of-9 from the three-point line; the ‘Yotes made 10-of-12 from the free throw line. 
 
Thanks to a healthy field goal percentage in the second half, the Bulldogs ended the game making 42.4 percent of their attempts; they were 18-of-31 from the field which included making 7-of-28 three pointers.  An outstanding 84 percent of McPherson’s free throws went through the hoop as they hit 16-of-19.  Kansas Wesleyan made 17-of-44 field goals and 17-of-23 shots from the charity stripe.  MC rolled in the rebounding category, grabbing 46 rebounds and held the Coyotes to 37. 
 
Samson Shivers (Houston, Texas) and Mason Hewitt (Norwich, Kan.) each tallied a game-high 18 points but did it in very different ways; Shivers made 5-of-6 from three-point range and 3-of-4 free throws while Hewitt went 8-of-14 from the field and 2-of-2 from the stripe.  Darius Hill (Kansas City, Kan.) had a great game for MC, tallying 16 points on 5-of-6 from the floor and 6-of-6 from the stripe; he also grabbed 15 total rebounds, four on the offensive end. 
 
Fields scored 15 points on 4-of-14 from the field and 7-of-9 from the charity stripe; he went 0-4 from distance.  Dane Brinker also scored 15 on 6-of-12 from the floor with three makes from behind the three-point line.  Brock Borovetz scored the game’s first basket and ended with 14 points on 3-of-5 shooting from the field and 5-of-6 from the line. 
 
After one day of rest, the Bulldogs will be back at it as they host Sterling College on January 12th; tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m. (CT) with junior varsity games to prelude the varsity.
