MC will be looking to use the momentum gained in a close victory over the Lady Coyotes from this past Thursday. The game started with the Lady ‘Dogs playing an aggressive style of basketball that forced multiple turnovers, giving McPherson some easy fast-break points. A turnover-streak of their own allowed Kansas Wesleyan to hang around but Mac didn’t give up their advantage. Towards the end of the half, KWU went on a 17-3 run and took a 32-29 lead into the locker room.
The first part of the second half was all Kansas Wesleyan but a three-ball by Cheyenne Eisenhour gave the Lady Bulldogs a 38-36 lead which they didn’t give up the rest of the contest. MC was only able to increase the score margin to double-digits once, coming with 9:11 left on the clock. The Lady ‘Yotes didn’t give up and pulled within two points with just seconds remaining. Going 2-of-4 from the free throw line was enough for McPherson to pull out the 56-52 win.
McPherson ended the game 21-of-58 from the field for a 36.2 field goal percentage. 12-of-21 free throw attempts were taken by MC and they closed out the game 2-of-10 from downtown. A poor shooting night was logged by Kansas Wesleyan as they only put in 24.6% of their 65 attempts; going 3-of-23 from deep did not help out the Lady ‘Yotes’ cause. 26 attempts were shot by KWU and 17 fell through the net. The Coyotes barely edged the Bulldogs in rebounds, grabbing 48 to MC’s 45; McPherson did win the assist battle, recording nine dimes.
Eisenhour was the Lady Bulldogs’ leading scorer, totaling 12 points and the team’s only three pointers. Ali Brewster, Madison Chambers and Beth Cooper each put in nine points; Cooper got hers on 50% shooting while Chambers tallied 10 rebounds, leading the team. Kaylee Cramer was also big on the glass, pulling down nine rebounds; she also had three assists, tying her with Cooper for the team high.
With the win, Mac is now tied for fourth in the KCAC with Sterling and Kansas Wesleyan at 4-3.
Following the battle with the Warriors of SC, McPherson will prepare for a Wednesday night matchup with the Bethel College Lady Threshers; that contest is on January 16th at 6:00 p.m. (CT)
Scouting Sterling
The 8-9 Sterling team is having an up and down season as they haven’t been able to streak together more than two wins; they are currently riding one of those two-game streaks as they’ve defeated KWU and, most recently, Bethel College
Against the Threshers, a 43.4% shooting percentage helped drive SC to a 20-point victory as they won 65-45. The Lady Warriors ended the game 23-of-53 from the field and 17-of-30 from the free throw line. The Sterling defense held Bethel to a 32.7 field goal percentage; BC only made 1-of-8 from deep and 8-of-19 from the charity stripe. SC had 13 steals and was able to force 24 Thresher turnovers.
Three Warriors were in double figures as the clock hit zero with Cassi Spleiss leading all scorers with 14 points on 6-of-10 from the field and 1-of-2 from the stripe. Lori Dauer was second on the team with her 11 points, coming on 4-of-5 field goals and 3-of-5 free throws. Randi Lucas was the last player to make it to double-digits, scoring 10. Fellow starters Leslie Branch and Kayla Eilert scored nine and eight points, respectively; Eilert had a team-high nine rebounds and four assists.
SC has been having a tough time making it to 60 points this season as they only average 58.8 per contest; they are hitting 33.1 percent of their field goals but are just making 19.1% from behind the arc, which is second to last in the KCAC. They are doing a solid job of cleaning the glass, pulling down over 40 rebounds a game, third best in the league. 18.7 turnovers are amassed by Sterling each outing and they are only stealing back a KCAC low 6.9. Their 52 total blocks and 3.1 per game place them fourth in the conference in both categories.
Dauer is scoring 11.9 points a game, hitting 48.3% of her 145 attempts; she also leads the team in blocks with 16 this season. Eilert is next on the scoring totem pole, averaging 11.8 with the majority of her points coming from the stripe as she’s made a KCAC-leading 114 free throws this year; she is grabbing a team-high, and third best in the conference, 7.2 boards per contest. Spleiss also averages double figures for the season, scoring 11.0 points each time she hits the court.
Bethany College is next on the docket for the Lady Warriors as they travel to Lindsborg, Kansas to take on the Swedes on January 16th.
