Hillsboro, Kan. – Leading after one period of basketball wasn’t enough as the Lady Bulldogs gave up 54 second half points to Tabor College while scoring just 34 of their own giving the Blue Jays a 74-55 victory. MC moves to 12-9 for the season and are 6-5 in the KCAC, placing them fifth in the conference standings.
The first half of basketball was a sloppy one as McPherson had plenty of forced, rushed passes while Tabor threw up some ridiculous, unnecessary shots. TC held the largest lead at eight points, coming at the 10-minute mark, but that was short lived as the Lady Bulldogs charged back and took the lead for the first time with just over one-minute remaining on the clock. Mac went into the locker room up 21-20.
Mac ended the first period shooting just 27.6 percent from the field and made only 1-of-4 from behind the three-point arc; 4-of-6 free throws were bucketed by the Bulldogs with
Kaylee Cramer (Dighton, Kan.) and
Bailey Brown (Glen Elder, Kan.) each hitting two. Tabor had an abysmal first half in terms of field goal percentage as a staggering 13.5% of their 37 attempts found their way through the net; 3-of-8 from deep and 7-of-9 from the charity stripe helped TC keep the score close. Nine offensive and 26 total rebounds were gathered by the Lady Jays; McPherson tallied 28 total and 23 defensive as they had plenty of chances to rebound thanks to Tabor’s misses.
In the second half, the two teams traded baskets for the first part of the period with MC’s largest lead of four points coming in the first few minutes. TC would then rally and take the lead, keeping the momentum for the remainder of the half as miscues by the Lady ‘Dogs allowed Tabor to slowly but surely increase their lead. McPherson never gave up, fighting every step of the way but it seemed as if every shot attempt heaved up at the basket by the Blue Jays found the bottom of the net. TC closed out the game with the 74-55 victory.
A 13-of-35 second half wasn’t enough to keep the Lady ‘Dogs in the contest; they made 5-of-11 from long range and 3-of-4 from the free throw line. Tabor outdid themselves in the second period, draining 61.3 percent of their field goals which included cashing in on 7-of-9 from distance, four on back-to-back possessions; hitting 9-of-12 from the stripe was enough to keep MC from any late charge.
McPherson ended the game shooting a 32.8 field goal percentage, making 21-of-64 from the floor with 6-of-15 being three balls; 70% of the team’s 10 attempts from the stripe made it through the net. Despite an incredible second half shooting percentage, TC ended the game hitting 35.3% of their field goals; 10-of-17 three pointers and 16-of-21 free throws were bucketed by the Blue Jays. 47 rebounds, 15 on the offensive end, were tallied by Tabor while Mac pulled down 42 total boards. MC recorded eight assists and 16 turnovers; the Lady Jays logged 14 assists and only eight turnovers.
Kramer led a trio of Bulldogs that made it over 10 points with 14 on her 5-of-7 night from the field and 2-of-2 from the stripe. Brown was next on the list with 12 points coming from 4-of-9 field goals and 3-of-6 free throws.
Cheyenne Eisenhour (Stafford, Kan.) scored seven first half points and ended with 10, making 50% of her eight field goal attempts.
Beth Cooper (Seibert, Colo.) came off the bench to lead the squad in rebounds, grabbing seven; she also had a team-high two assist to go along with her two points
Three Tabor players scored a team-high 14 points. Nikki Lewis went 4-of-6 from the field with one three ball and 5-of-6 from the stripe. Katlyn Mary made 5-of-11 from the floor and 1-of-2 from the free throw line. Molly Moran rounded out the leading scorers with her 5-of-8 from the field, four of which were from distance. Hannah Paust entered the game from the bench and scored 12, finishing off the double-digit Lady Jays. The team’s leading scorer for the season, Janelle Rust, was jut 1-of-12 from the field but made 5-of-5 from the charity stripe and tallied 18 rebounds.
A home contest against the Ottawa University Braves will give McPherson a chance to get back on the winning track; OU comes to the Sport Center January 26
