McPherson, Kan. – The KCAC’s third and fifth place teams square off against each other on the final day of January in an important matchup as seeding for the conference tournament is at stake. Southwestern College will make the journey to McPherson College and the Sport Center this Thursday with the game tipping off at 6:00 p.m. (CT)

Mac has won four of their last six with their most recent triumph coming this past Saturday when they took on the OU Braves in McPherson. The competition began with a quick back-and-forth start as the two teams jostled for the early advantage. MC jumped out in front by the 15-minute mark and continued to stay on top for the final 10 minutes of the half with their largest lead of nine points coming as the halftime buzzer sounded; the score was 28-19 at the break.
In the second period, the Lady Bulldogs jumped out to a double figure advantage in the first few minutes of the half. Following a nine-point run by Ottawa, the score was 41-40 in favor of MC with 8:20 to play. The score stayed tight for the next few minutes but McPherson always stayed on top, holding off the Braves. In the game’s final couple of minutes, Mac’s lead went back to double-digits which is where it ended as the ‘Dogs got the 69-59 win.
McPherson closed out the game with a 43.4 shooting percentage as 23-of-53 field goals were scored which included 5-of-17 from long range; 18-of-23 free throws were tallied by the Lady Bulldogs. Ottawa’s second half shooting moved their game’s field goal percentage to a respectable 36.4 percent; they also made 5-of-17 from behind the arc and nailed 14-of-17 from the stripe. MC pulled down 10 more rebounds than the Braves as they tallied 39 to OU’s 29; Mac grabbed 11 off of the offensive glass and put seven of those balls in the hoop for their 14 second chance points.
Kaylee Cramer led the team in scoring with her 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting including a three pointer; she also had five rebounds. Bailey Brown and Ali Brewster each totaled 12 points; Brown hit 7-of-8 from the charity stripe and 2-of-7 from the field while Brewster made 5-of-10 from the floor. Madison Chambers was one point and one rebound away from a double-double, ending the game with nine of each. Beth Cooper also scored nine points, doing so on 3-of-10 from the field and 2-of-2 from the stripe.
MC will be on the road for their first game in February as they travel to Leavenworth, Kansas to take on the 8-16 University of Saint Mary Spires. That contest is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. (CT) on February 2nd.
Scouting Southwestern
The Moundbuilders are 14-7 for the season and 9-3 in conference play. They were the favorite to win the league this season and after a 8-1 first time through the KCAC, have lost two of their last three; their two defeats both came on the road as they were dropped by Friends University and Kansas Wesleyan University. Most recently, the Builders defeated Sterling College, at home, on Saturday 71-68.
Southwestern got a large chunk of their 71 points from the charity stripe as they cashed in on 21-of-25; they shot 37.1 percent from the field as they hit 23-of-62 with only 4-of-21 three pointers making their way through the hoop. The Lady Warriors didn’t get to the free throw line near as often (9-of-13) and had to hit their field goals to stay in the game; they went 28-of-64 from the floor and were 3-of-8 from deep. SWC used their height advantage to grab 41 rebounds, Sterling pulled down 36; 19 of the Moundbuilders’ rebounds were on the offensive end of the court.
Zefiryn Bryan led all scorers with her 22 points which came on 7-of-16 from the field and 8-of-10 from the stripe; she also tallied four rebounds, three assists and a team-high three steals. Montana Rickey and Annjelina Robinson each totaled 15 points, placing them second on the team; Rickey was 3-of-8 from the floor and a perfect 8-of-8 from the charity stripe while Robinson made 6-of-9 field goals and 2-of-2 free throws. Robinson tied Jana Reichenberger for most rebounds on the team with eight; five of Reichenberger’s boards came off the offensive glass.
The Lady Builders lead the conference in many categories including points scored per game which sits at 70.9; they make 39.4% of their field goals and drain 5.9 three pointers each time out. SWC gobbles up a KCAC-leading 42 rebounds per contest and outrebound their opponent by over three boards a game. 13.1 assists are tallied on average for Southwestern as well as 16.1 turnovers and 9.4 steals. They have totaled 75 blocks this season and record 3.6 an outing.
Bryan and Reichenberger are each averaging 11.33 points scored per game; Reichenberger has more total field goals (89) than Bryan (83) but Bryan has made 64 free throws compared to Reichenberger’s 59. They are also tied in rebounds per game, each pulling down 6.3 a contest; Bryan has more offensive rebounds this season and also leads the team in assists with 40. Kaitlin Tennyson is the next leading scorer as she averages 8.7 points per game; she is third in the KCAC in three balls made a game with 1.6. Trinicia Shaffer is the team’s leading assister and stealer; she has 77 total assists and 48 steals this season and averages a conference second best 3.9 and 2.4 per contest, respectively.
SWC will be back at home on February 2nd as they host the Swedes of Bethany College.
