Late Push Not Enough for MC Women

McPherson, Kan. – Despite putting five players in double figures, the McPherson College women’s basketball team could not pull off the upset of Southwestern College, falling 89-80.  MC is now 13-10 on the year and 7-6 in the KCAC, sitting fifth in the standings with five conference games left.
 
The Lady Bulldogs seemed to control the first few minutes of the contest, leading by as many as four points in the first seven minutes but could not keep their advantage as a 19-4 run by Southwestern put the Builders up 29-18 just past the midway point of the period.  The Moundbuilder lead hovered around the double-digits for the remainder of the half with their largest lead being 12 and MC getting as close as eight.  The halftime score was 40-30 in favor of SWC.
 
Mac made 11-of-33 from the field with 2-of-7 three pointers falling through the hoop; they converted on 6-of-9 from the charity stripe.  Southwestern hit 44.1 percent of their 34 attempts and knocked in 4-of-14 from long range; 6-of-10 free throws were tallied by the Moundbuilders.  16 of SWC’s points came on the fast break.  Kaylee Cramer (Dighton, Kan.) led all scorers with her 10 points on 3-of-7 from the floor and 4-of-4 from the stripe.
 
The second half began with the Lady Builders increasing their lead to 17 points less than two minutes into the period.  McPherson got their deficit back to a manageable seven points but SWC stayed in front by double-figures for most of the middle section of the half.  A small surge by Mac got them within five points with eight minutes to go but 11-straight points by Southwestern put the Moundbuilders back up by 16 three minutes later.  SWC got up by as many as 18 with right over two minutes remaining and after four-straight three balls by MC, the final score ended a lot closer as the Builders won 89-80.
 
McPherson shot an above average 55.9 field goal percentage in the second period, cashing in on 19-of-34 from the field and 7-of-12 from distance; they made 5-of-7 from the charity stripe.  The Moundbuilders saw 17-of-36 field goals go through the basket with 3-of-10 being three pointers; a 12-of-19 showing from the free throw line was logged by Southwestern. 
 
Mac made 30-of-67 for the contest, converting on a season high 44.8% from the floor; they made 9-of-19 from deep and 11-of-16 from the stripe.  SWC went 32-of-70 from the field and made 29.2 percent from three-point land; they were 18-of-29 from the free throw line.  MC grabbed 44 rebounds in the game while Southwestern totaled 39; each squad had 11 offensive boards.  18 turnovers were totaled by McPherson; the Moundbuilders had 13.  SWC tallied 41 points from their bench players.
 
Cramer led the ‘Dogs in scoring with her 14 on 5-of-10 from the field and 4-of-4 from the free throw line.  Ali Brewster (Milton, Kan.), Tayler Puttergill (Tryon, Neb.) and Madison Chambers (Wellsville, Kan.) each put up 12 points; Brewster was 5-of-9 from the floor, Puttergill made 6-of-13 field goals and Chambers drained 4-of-9 from the floor and 3-of-3 from the stripe.  Cheyenne Eisenhour (Stafford, Kan.) scored 11 points by making 50% of her eight field goal attempts.  Brewster was the team leader in assists with five, tied with Beth Cooper (Seibert, Colo.), while Chambers brought down a team-high eight rebounds.
 
Southwestern had their share of players that scored 10+.  Freshman post player Jana Reichenberger led all players with 16 points, coming on 7-of-11 from the field and 2-of-3 from the charity stripe; she also tallied a game-high nine boards.  Trinicia Shaffer bucket 13 to be second on the team and was followed by Sheri Zoglman who scored 12.  The final two double-digit scorers for SWC were Zefiryn Bryan and Jessica Hobbs who totaled 11 and 10, respectively.
 
The Lady Bulldogs will take the trek to Leavenworth, Kansas to take on the University of Saint Mary on February 2nd; tipoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. (CT)
