Falcons Fly to McPherson to Take on the Lady ‘Dogs

McPherson, Kan. – Now in the midst of a three-game winning streak, McPherson College’s women’s basketball team will take on the Friends University Lady Falcons Saturday, January 5 at 5:00 p.m. (CT) in the McPherson Sport Center.

The Lady Bulldogs sit at 9-6 overall and 3-2 in the KCAC after taking it to the University of Saint Mary this past Thursday, showcasing their defense that held the Spires to just 46 points.  McPherson took control from the get-go, using a 22-1 run to create a lead that couldn’t be surpassed.  Mac coasted for the final few minutes of the first half, leading 33-13 as the halftime buzzer sounded.

Saint Mary got the first bucket of the second period, bringing their deficit to just under 20 points; the gap between the two teams stayed in the upper teens for the first 10 minutes of the half.  Some mini-runs by the Bulldog offense put MC back in front by 20+ points.  Both teams went to their benches for the final five minutes of the game; the McPherson reserves held the lead and gave the team a 74-46 victory.

Mac ended the contest 23-of-61 from the field and 5-of-13 from behind the arc with all of their three point baskets coming in the first period; they were near 70% from the free throw line, making 23-of-33.  USM had a rough night from the floor, making only 23.7% of their field goals and 19 from the stripe.  McPherson grabbed 14 offensive and 37 defensive rebounds in the game, topping Saint Mary in both categories.  The Bulldogs recorded an even 15 assists and 15 turnovers while stealing the ball 10 times. 

MC’s leading scorer for the game was Cheyenne Eisenhour who bucketed 7-of-9 from the field and 4-of-5 from the charity stripe for a McPherson career-high 20 points.  She was followed by Bailey Brown who got the majority of her 11 points from the free throw line where she went 8-of-10.  Ali Brewster grabbed 10 rebounds to go along with her nine points; she also tallied a team-high three assists. 

Brown’s showing from the stripe moved her to the top-10 ranks in the NAIA D-II in free throw percentage as she is now making 86.7% of her attempts, placing her seventh in the country.  McPherson as a team is now 19th in defensive rebounds per contest, averaging 28.93; they also sit 30th in total rebounds a game with 42.2.

A road contest against the Kansas Wesleyan Lady Coyotes will be the next competition for the Lady Bulldogs; they travel to Salina, Kansas on January 10th for the 6:00 p.m. (CT) game.

Scouting Friends

The Lady Falcons sit at 9-7 for the season and are tied with McPherson for fourth in the KCAC with their 3-2 record.  After a rough 1-3 stretch of non-conference games over the holiday break, Friends got back on track with a 65-54 victory over Sterling College on Thursday.

The Falcons lead their game against SC from the start, controlling the tempo and pace, and took a 37-23 lead into halftime.  Friends did get outscored in the second period but played mostly reserves for the final minutes of the contest.  The Lady Falcons ended the night 23-of-58 from the floor including going 8-of-19 from deep; they were 11-of-15 from the charity stripe.  Sterling shot the ball with a 36.4% accuracy, making 16-of-44 from the field but were just 2-of-8 from behind the arc; a 20-of-24 night from the free throw line helped keep the Warriors in the contest.  Friends tallied 15 offensive boards in their win; they also had seven blocks.

Minta Whetstone led the Falcons in scoring with 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting; she was the lone Friends player to reach double-digits.  Sarah Munds, Abril Marshall and Ashley Mills each scored eight points in their team’s win. 

This season, the Falcons average 60.63 points a game and convert on 39.5% of their field goals but make just 4.3 shots from deep each time out.  Friends has been squeaking out wins in the rebounding category this season as they have a positive 0.5 rebounding margin.  12.8 assists and 9.4 steals are recorded by the Lady Falcons per contest; they also average 2.4 blocks every time they hit the court.

Marshall is the team’s leading scorer this season, despite coming into every game from the bench; the four year player is scoring 12.9 points a game while making 53.8% of her field goal attempts.  Munds is next on the list, bucketing eight points per contest; she leads the team in rebounds per game with 5.3.  Whitney Bates is Friends’ leader in assists and steals each time out, averaging 3.44 and 1.88, respectively. 

The Lady Falcons will stay on the road for their next KCAC contest as they travel to Lindsborg, Kansas to take on the Swedes of Bethany College on January 10th.
