MC moved to 3-3 in the KCAC and 9-7 overall with the defeat to the Lady Falcons on Saturday.  In the game’s first few minutes, Friends seemed to have everything under control, keeping the pace of the contest to their liking and pounding the ball inside to their bigger post players.  McPherson continued to fight and took the lead, with the help of their free throws, for the first time at the 2:51 mark; they stayed ahead for the rest of the half and led 31-30 heading into their locker room.

The Lady Falcons scored the first basket of the second period and never relinquished the lead for the rest of the game.  The Bulldogs kept the score within a few points for the first part of the half but Friends was determined to maintain their advantage and put together a 15-2 run; the Falcons would hold a double-digit lead for the rest of the game, winning 77-55.

A 34.7 shooting percentage was recorded by the Bulldogs in their loss; they were just 2-of-17 from three point land but managed to make 19-of-24 from the stripe.  Friends hit 52.7 percent of their 55 attempts in the game and made 84.6% of their free throws.  Only 27 rebounds were tallied by the Falcons, despite having a noticeable height-advantage; McPherson tallied 34 boards.  24 total turnovers were committed by MC; they only had 10 assists in the competition.

Chambers and Brewster each scored 11 points to lead the Lady Bulldogs; Brewster was just 2-of-8 from the field but hit 7-of-10 free throws while Chambers, who also had a team high four assists, made three of her four field goals and 5-of-6 from the stripe.  Beth Cooper gave MC some energy from the bench, making 3-of-6 from the floor including 2-of-3 from behind the arc; she also made both of her attempts from the charity stripe for 10 points.  Bre Gillespie entered the game from the bench and scored six points in just 2:27; she was a perfect 4-of-4 from the free throw line and 1-of-1 from the floor.  Cheyenne Eisenhour had a rough game, making 1-of-5 from the field and turning the ball over eight times.

McPherson will get to host their third game in just two weeks following their contest against KWU.  Sterling College makes the trip to the Sport Center in McPherson on January 12th for a 5:00 p.m. (CT) competition.

Scouting Kansas Wesleyan

After winning six-straight games, dating back to December 6th, the 9-7 Lady Coyotes lost on Saturday to the Warriors of Sterling College 68-66.  During KWU’s streak, they took down three KCAC schools and, over the holiday break, three non-conference opponents.

In the loss to Sterling, Kansas Wesleyan trailed 36-22 at halftime but was able to rally back and make it a close game, scoring 44 points in the second period.  A poor shooting percentage from downtown loomed large for the Lady ‘Yotes as they hit just 3-of-18; they were 22-of-46 from the rest of the floor, ending the game with a 39.1 field goal percentage.  KWU also struggled from the free throw line, making just 13-of-22.  Sterling put in 44% of their field goals and only attempted four three pointers; they drained 23-of-32 from the charity stripe, keeping the Coyotes at bay in the game’s final minutes.

Alecia Smith was the leading scorer for Kansas Wesleyan with her 19 points on 5-of-12 shooting as she went 0-of-4 from deep and made 9-of-12 from the stripe; Smith also led the squad in rebounds with nine.  Stephanie Frost was the other player to hit double figures for Kansas Wesleyan; she had 11 points on 5-of-9 field goals.  Jessica Olson scored nine points and had a team-high five assists in the loss.

KWU sits second in the conference in points scored per game with 67.6 and convert 36.8% of their field goals; they make just under six three balls per contest, hitting 28.2 percent of their shots from distance.  40.1 rebounds per game are tallied by the Coyotes; they are outrebounded by 1.75 on average.  Over 20 turnovers are recorded by Kansas Wesleyan but they steal back a KCAC-leading 11.3 each outing; they are also first in the conference in blocks per game, averaging 3.88.

Smith is scoring 15.06 points a game while making 42.1 percent of her field goals, placing her second and third in the KCAC, respectively; she also averages 8.63 rebounds.  Vanessa Kresin is next on the scoring list with her 12.6 points per contest, putting her fifth highest in the conference; 56 total steals and 3.5 per game put Kresin seventh and eighth in the NAIA D-II, respectively.  Frost also averages double-digits, scoring 10.2 points each time she hits the court, doing most of her damage from behind the arc.

Another home contest awaits the Lady Coyotes after their game with McPherson; Bethany College will make the short trek up to Salina to play KWU on January 12th.
