McPherson, Kan. – Despite getting down early, McPherson soccer maintained composure and out played, shot and scored the Friends Falcons, winning 5-2. The victory moves the 'Dogs to 3-1 in the conference and .500 for the season at 6-6.
"We played really well tonight," said Coach Quint. "Our team responded to a little adversity after being down early in the match. That adversity made our players focus more and get back to our game plan. Offensively we were extremely dangerous and our finishing was spot on tonight especially with our set pieces. There were a lot of players that played very well but two players that stand out are Jared Kientz and Oscar Cortez, those guys played phenomenal."
It was a fast start for the Falcons as they scored their first goal five minutes into the contest. After McPherson settled down, they took control of the match, knocking in a couple of goals with one by
Oscar Cortez (Dallas, Texas) and the other by
Gary McDonald (Glasgow, Scotland) a few minutes before halftime; the 'Dogs took a 2-1 lead into the locker room.
Half number two started off strong for Mac as Cortez narrowly missed his second goal a few minutes in. Reigning KCAC Player of the Week
Johnny Nuthall (Reno, Nev.) managed to put one by Friends shortly after, giving MC a 3-1 advantage.
Friends, attempting to keep the game within reach, scored their second goal in the 58
th minute, moving their deficit back to one.
Cortez slotted another ball just over 10 minutes later, pushing the McPherson lead to 4-2. Nuthall added his second goal with time winding down, guaranteeing MC's victory. Out in front 5-2, McPherson subbed out Cortez and Nuthall as they coasted to their sixth win of the year.
As a team, the Bulldogs put 14 towards the Falcon goalkeeper; six attempts were on target. Nuthall and Cortez had near identical stat lines as both took four shots and put two on target; the only difference is that Cortez logged one foul in the win. McDonald and
Nick Torres (McPherson, Kan.) were the other two Mac players to put a ball on frame with McDonald's finding its way to the net.
