Box Score
McPherson, Kan. – It was another tight match for the Lady Bulldog volleyball squad as they went down 3-1 to the Kansas Wesleyan University Coyotes. MC is now 13-14 for the year and 6-7 in the conference, placing them 5
th in the KCAC.
The opening set started even with each team making runs but it was a late 8-5 push by the Lady 'Yotes that gave them the 25-19 edge. McPherson got things in gear for the second set, taking a 6-0 lead right off the bat; they would maintain that soft cushion for most of the match, evening things out after a 25-18 win.
Following the eight minute break, set number three started close but a 9-3 run by KWU in the middle of the game put them ahead by a comfortable margin; they would eventually win 25-14. What turned out to be the final set of the match was controlled by Kansas Wesleyan from the start as they quickly got ahead of the Lady 'Dogs 13-3; despite a push by Mac late in the game, KWU maintained their advantage for the 25-14 victory.
Again, unforced errors were the downfall of the Bulldogs as they had 26 attacking errors. The offensive attack was led by junior Tori Phelan (Rangely, Colo.) who had 14 kills on 32 attempts with just four errors. Cortlyne Huppe (Florence, Colo.) got close to double-digits with her eight kills.
Rachel Phillips (Maize, Kan.) was her consistent self, posting 34 assists, 14 digs and two assisted blocks.
Tying Phillips in digs was libero Emily Warner (Wichita, Kan.) and fellow freshman Taylor Johnson (Valley Center, Kan.) led the team with 16; she also had six kills in the loss.
Mac will next travel to Wichita, Kansas to face the 20-8, 11-1 in conference, Friends University Lady Falcons on October 26th. Saturday's match is a triangular with Avila University; the match against Friends is scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m. (CT)
