McPherson, Kan. – Bulldog volleyball faced two different squads on Saturday as Friends University, Avila University and MC got together for a triangular in Wichita, Kansas. Mac lost their first match 3-1, coming against the Lady Falcons, but picked it up in their second contest as they knocked off the Avila Eagles 3-1.
The opening competition against KCAC's second place Friends squad started well for McPherson as they won their first set 25-22. However the Lady Falcons held MC to 19 and 21 points in the second and third games before claiming the victory on a 25-13 final set.
Immediately following their contest with FU, McPherson went up against a struggling 6-21 Avila team. The first set, which turned out to be the closest between the two, went MC's way at 25-22. The Lady 'Dogs won 25-19 in the second and then put in some of their reserves for the third set; the Eagles took advantage of the coldness of the new players winning in convincing fashion 25-7. The Bulldogs put their first team back in and they ended the match after a 25-13 set.
Cortlyne Huppe (Florence, Colo.) recorded a team-high 22 kills on the day with 14 coming against Friends and eight more when they were facing Avila. Taylor Johnson (Valley Center, Kan.) tallied 15 for the two matches while senior Karis Janzen (Hillsboro, Kan.) had nine kills in her four sets against the Eagles.
In her eight sets, Rachel Phillips (Maize, Kan.) put up 74 assists with 36 against the Lady Falcons; the senior also had 42 digs which put her second to libero Emily Warner (Wichita, Kan.) who totaled 43.
McPherson is on the road this coming week, playing inter-city rival Central Christian College on October 27th, then facing Bethany on Wednesday the 30th of October and Bethel on November 2nd; both matches are set for 7:00 p.m. (CT)
