York, Neb. – The women's basketball team at McPherson College slid to 1-5 after a back-and-forth loss to York College. The 82-68 defeat is the fifth-straight for the Bulldogs after they won their first game of the season back in October.
The game started close, but was very low scoring with neither team reaching double-digits until five minutes had gone by. McPherson stayed within a handful until the nine-minute mark when YC went on a 13-0 run to jump in front by 15 points. The 'Dogs fought back, but still trailed 39-26 at the break.
Mac hit 9-of-26 from the floor for a 34.62 opening period field goal percentage; they had a difficult time hitting a three-ball, making 1-of-12 and went 7-of-11 from the free throw line. York converted on 15-of-39 field goals and nailed 5-of-16 threes; they were 4-of-6 from the charity stripe.
The Lady Panthers opened up the second half with a 16-0 run, breaking out a 27-point lead. The score margin stayed at the 20-point range until a 13-2 surge by MC pulled the score to 74-60. The Bulldogs were riding a hot-streak and got within 11 but just ran out of time as York claimed an 82-68.
McPherson had a hot hand in the final period as they drained over 50% of their 29 shot attempts; 6-of-11 three pointers and 4-of-6 from the line fell in the period. YC upped their game in the second half too, making 14-of-31 but just two from downtown; 13-of-21 free throw shots were counted by the Panthers.
For the 40 minutes, the Lady Bulldogs went 25-of-55, making 45.5 percent; 7-of-23 three-point baskets were counted as were 11-of-17 from the stripe. MC was outrebounded 31-to-45 and had 23 turnovers in the contest; they did tally 14 assists and 11 steals which netted 24 points. 39 of McPherson's points were scored in the paint and 29 from their bench.
Bailey Brown (Glen Elder, Kan.) scored 17 to lead the 'Dogs; she made 5-of-8 field goals and a perfect 5-of-5 free throws. Second on the team was
Sunny Smart (Coffeeville, Okla.) who converted on 3-of-10 from deep and 1-of-2 from two-point range; she also made 5-of-6 from the charity stripe to complete her season-high 16 points.
Chandler Short (Edgewood, Texas) bucketed nine points, nearing the double figure mark for the first time this year.
Mac is back at home for their next game as they host the Central Christian Lady Tigers on November 19
th; junior varsity is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. (CT) start while the varsity game will commence at 6:00 in the Sport Center.
