McPherson, Kan. – The time has come for the annual showdown between the two colleges of McPherson, Kansas. This year the Central Christian Tigers will be traveling east to the Sport Center of McPherson College to play the Bulldogs on their home court. Tipoff for the women is set for 6:00 p.m. (CT) with the men to follow at 8:00; junior varsity games will be held at 2:00 and 4:00
Both MC squads are coming off tough road losses where poor shooting hampered their chances of winning. The Lady 'Dogs traveled to York College and played against the Lady Panthers on Friday. It was a low scoring start as both teams had issues making buckets and neither squad took control; that is until YC went on a 13-0 run to create a 15-point gap between them and McPherson. With their inability to put the ball through the hoop, going 9-of-26 in the first 20 minutes with only 1-of-12 going in from deep, Mac saw themselves down 39-26 at halftime.
York came out red-hot in the second half, going on a 16-0 run which gave them a 27-point lead. For the next several minutes, the Panthers stayed out in front by 20+ but a surge from MC pulled the score closer to single-digits. Unfortunately time ran out and the 'Dogs couldn't complete the comeback, losing 82-68. The late push by Mac helped their shooting percentage, they hit over half of their 29 shots with six three balls. York used their early run to improve their field goal percentage; the made 14-of-31 from the floor and 13-of-21 from the charity stripe.
For the 40 minutes, the Lady Bulldogs went 25-of-55, making 45.5 percent; 7-of-23 three-point baskets were counted as were 11-of-17 from the stripe. MC was outrebounded 31-to-45 and had 23 turnovers in the contest; they did tally 14 assists and 11 steals which netted 24 points. 39 of McPherson's points were scored in the paint and 29 from their bench.
Bailey Brown scored 17 to lead the 'Dogs; she made 5-of-8 field goals and a perfect 5-of-5 free throws. Second on the team was Sunny Smart who converted on 3-of-10 from deep and 1-of-2 from two-point range; she also made 5-of-6 from the charity stripe to complete her season-high 16 points. Chandler short bucketed nine points, nearing the double figure mark for the first time this year.
The Lady Bulldogs host a four-team classic on November 22nd and 23rd for their next two contests; MC will play AIB College of Business on Friday at 8:00 and Northern New Mexico College on Saturday at 4:00.
The Mac men lost a disappointing 88-66 game at Bacone College on Saturday. It was a slow start for both clubs but the Warriors scored the first and didn't look back, holding the lead for the rest of the contest. BC had a small advantage for most of the half, holding off any pushes by the 'Dogs. After scoring seven of the last eight points in the period, Bacone found themselves ahead 40-28 at the break. MC constantly struggled from the foul line, making a mere 2-of-14; they went 12-of-34 from the floor and just 2-of-12 from range. BC kept their distance by making their free shots, hitting 14-of-17 from the stripe.
In the second period, the Bulldogs' lack of makes began to wear on the team as their confidence seemed to dwindle, creating more misses. Bacone increased the lead to 20 points which is where it hovered for the majority of the half; the Warriors ended the game with an 88-66 victory. McPherson went 10-of-33 in the final 20 minutes, making just 2-of-13 threes and 16-of-28 free throws. BC made 60% of their 30 attempts including five three pointers; they also converted 6-of-9 from the line.
The Bulldogs ended the night making 22-of-67 from the floor including an unfortunate 4-of-25 (16%) from deep; less than half of their free throws went through the rim as they totaled 18-of-42. Mac did keep their turnovers under 10, logging eight; they only had four assists however. The 'Dogs pulled in two more rebounds than the Warriors, totaling 42 with 20 offensive boards.
Devirous Johnson seemed to be the only MC playing seeing his shots fall as he scored a season-high 22 points, making 9-of-14 field goals and 4-of-6 free throws; he also boarded a team leading 16 rebounds with eight coming off the offensive glass. Erik DeRoo was the next closest Bulldog to hit double figures as he was 2-of-8 from downtown and 2-of-2 from the stripe.
