McPherson, Kan. – In their third win of the season the men's basketball team at McPherson College took down a resilient Manhattan Christian squad on Monday night 80-60. The 'Dogs have averaged 83.3 points per game while surrendering 68.7 in their three wins this year.
The Crusaders came out strong in the opening minutes against Mac, taking an early advantage and then maintaining the slight edge for the first 15+ minutes; MCC was aided by the inability to shoot it into the ocean by McPherson as the Bulldogs had hit just one from downtown. With the teams tied at 26-26, MC went on an 8-4 run to close out the half with a 34-30 lead.
Despite converting on just 1-of-12 from behind the three point line, the 'Dogs shot 39.5% from the field, making 14-of-26 from two-point range; they also scored on 50% of their six free throws. Manhattan Christian made 13-of-24 field goals in the first 20 minutes with 4-of-9 falling from deep; they were 0-of-2 from the stripe.
In the second period, McPherson held a small advantage for the first five minutes before they broke it wide open after a 19-4 run, putting them up 61-43. From there, the 'Dogs led by over 15 for the remaining nine minutes. Mac reached a 20-point lead with just a few to play, ending the game on top 80-60.
Half number two went much better for the Bulldogs in every facet of shooting the ball; they were 15-of-33 from the field (45.5%), 3-of-9 from long range (33.3%) and 13-of-16 (81.3%) from the charity stripe. The Crusaders had a tough time finding the bottom of the net in the second period, making a mere 28.2 percent from the floor with 2-of-12 going in from beyond the arc; they did convert on 6-of-7 from the line however.
For the game, McPherson made a solid 42.3% of their 71 shot attempts but struggled from downtown, making 4-of-21; they shot over 70 percent from the foul line with 16-of-22 falling. Mac outrebounded MCC 46-38 and hauled in 16 offensive boards. The team had a 16-to-11 assist to turnover ratio and forced 17 Manhattan Christian TOs with 10 steals. The Bulldogs scored 63 of their total in the paint and had 30 fast break points.
Devirous Johnson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led all scorers with his 21 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the floor and 5-of-6 night from the stripe; he also tallied 13 rebounds for his second double-double this season.
Brian (BJ) Johnson (Kansas City, Kan.) was second on the squad in terms of points and rebounds with 18 and 10, respectively with a 6-of-6 showing from the line; he also had two assists and two steals.
Samson Shivers (Houston, Texas) and
TJ Grant (South Bend, Ind.) supplied double figure scoring with Shivers, who was one rebound from his second career double-double, making 5-of-12 field goals and 2-of-4 free throws for his 15; Grant provided a spark off the bench for MC, hitting both free throws and 4-of-10 field goals with one three ball for 11 points.
Erik DeRoo (Tyler, Texas) and
Joey Powers (Welch, Okla.) both led the team in assists with three apiece.
The 'Dogs have a weekend trip to Texas for their next two matchups; they face Paul Quinn College on Friday, November 8 at 7:30 p.m. (CT) in Dallas, Texas and then Southwestern Assemblies of God University on Saturday in Waxahachei, Texas starting at 5:00 p.m.
The McPherson College Alumni office will be hosting a tailgate party prior to Saturday's game in Waxahachei as the Lady 'Dogs face SAGU at 1:00. Festivities start at 11:30 a.m. at 1200 Sycamore St. in Waxahachei. The Bulldog Pep Rally will be located in the parking lot behind the Garrison Wellness Center under the white tent while the basketball games will be played in the Sheaffer Center off of Highland Avenue.
